Hypertension
Hi ,
Do you notice that every time you see your general medical practitioner that they always check your blood pressure? What is that all about? Our automatic response is that they are making sure that we do not have high blood pressure, because high blood pressure can kill us. This is true, but did
you know that 90% of the time the doctor has no idea what causes high blood pressure, even after all the blood work and fancy tests?
Yes, about 10% of the time there is a specific pathological disease process such as in the kidneys or artery linings. But most of the time there is nothing they can point to as the cause. So they call this 90% essential hypertension. I figure they came up with this name because essentially they don’t know why you have hypertension.

High blood pressure is a serious condition, just like too high a water pressure in your plumbing at home would be a problem. Somewhere in your system a gasket is going to blow and bam, you have a stroke or other “cardiovascular event.” I can tell you from personal experience caring for Ellen that a stroke is no fun. Yes, Ellen had high blood pressure issues prior to her stroke. Immediately after her stroke increased medications were keeping her blood
pressure under control, but we have it down to normal now through natural means.
Controlling hypertension through medications is a scary process to me because the medications are various forms of poison that are designed to inhibit heart function. The idea is to shut down the strength of the heart so it won’t pump so hard. But hypertension is not a heart problem. The heart is pumping hard because it is being told to pump hard to try to get blood to the starving tissues that need more blood. The problem is out in the vessels that carry
the blood everywhere.

Imaging your house plumbing once again, but this time the pipes have become filled with calcium hard water deposits to the point that the openings are only one third the size they were originally. You turn on your faucet and only get a dribble of water. You don’t get enough water to make the shower work at all. If you could open up and increase the water pressure at the main line coming into your house, it would make everything work normally… but at a
cost. Now the increased pressure is pushing on all the old pipe joints and something is going to break. For us not having enough water pressure to make our shower work is an inconvenience. In the body, low blood flow leads to tissue death. When tissues don’t get the oxygen and nutrients they need, they send out chemical messages to the heart screaming that they are dying and need more blood. The heart responds by working harder to try to force blood to these
tissues. Poisoning the heart so that it can’t respond to these messages seems like a bad choice to me. But obviously allowing the pressure to rise to the point that a stroke is possible is not a good idea either.
The idea of the pipes being clogged with hard water buildup makes intuitive sense, so the medical researchers back in the 50’s looked inside blood vessels and sure enough found blockages to blood flow in the form of cholesterol plaque – hardening of the arteries. In an amazingly simple answer, the medical world decided that cholesterol is the cause of this blood pressure problem that has plagued them for so long, so all we had to do is eliminate cholesterol.
Initially the idea was to eliminate it from our food supply. This faulty idea was pushed for 60 years, even when the studies back in the 60’s and 70’s showed that dietary cholesterol consumption had little or no effect on blood cholesterol levels because the cholesterol in our blood stream is manufactured by our own body. Every hormone in our body is made from cholesterol as well as the cell walls of all our cells.

Despite the obviously vital nature of cholesterol for so many things in our body, the next step was to invent drugs to block the body’s ability to form cholesterol – the statin drugs that are being pushed on everyone – a trillion dollar business. This is another bad idea to my mind. No one bothered to ask why only some people were getting cholesterol buildup in their arteries. Also no one was asking why it was that 60% of cardiovascular accidents
happened when there was no cholesterol buildup. The mind set seems to be to shoot the enemy you see and don’t ask where the real problems are. Why is something vital and friendly to the body causing problems?
To understand the real problems you have to understand a little bit about how blood vessels work. They are not just pipes carrying blood around. Blood vessels shrink and expand to control blood flow to different areas of the body. For instance if you go to lift heavy weights, the blood vessels in the muscles open up to allow more oxygen and nutrients to the muscle cells. Since you only have so much blood to work with, when you open up more flow in one area, you
have to also close down flow in another area to keep the pressure in the system even. When you use your muscles, the blood flow to your digestive tract usually decreases. Your nervous system acting on the outer muscular layer of blood vessels controls this process. This happens even when you think about having to use your muscles, like when you feel afraid or tense, or like when you are in a doctor’s office. Stress and tension are the most common cause of high blood
pressure. Methods to reduce stress and tension, either by generating a different environment or by specific techniques to relieve tension in the body, are the answer to this piece of the puzzle.

What about the clogged artery problem? Hardening of the arteries or arteriosclerosis are a real issue. On a gross level it looks like cholesterol is the problem, but actually the cholesterol is part of the body’s attempt to solve the real problem – inflammation destroying patches of the blood vessel walls. Cholesterol is actually an emergency bandage to try to keep the vessel wall from blowing a hole and leaking/hemorrhaging. The real enemy is
inflammatory free radicals, rancid oils, toxic chemicals, and sugar in our diet. These act directly in damaging vessel walls and triggering hormonal and immune inflammatory responses by our body that cause further damage during the fight to neutralize these poisons.
The Standard American Diet (SAD) is totally full of exactly the types of foods that cause vascular damage resulting in symptoms like high blood pressure, arteriosclerosis, heart attacks, strokes, and later various dementias and disease states. If these things are a concern to you, then eliminate all sugar, flour, and seed oils from your diet. Then for good measure eliminate all the toxic chemicals you are exposed to as food additives, preservatives, coloring agents,
packaging materials, as well as the chemicals you absorb through your skin and lungs from household and personal products. And if you are really sensitive, you need to eliminate the pesticides on the foods you eat and the antibiotics and growth hormones in foods as well. As you can easily see, it is a huge undertaking to avoid getting poisoned and as a result diseased in America today. It can be done. It is kind of like the old question of how you go about eating an
elephant – you eat it one bite at a time.

In terms of health impact, I would say start with eliminating seed oils from your diet. That means all fried foods and foods made with canola, corn, soy, safflower, sunflower, and other vegetable oils. The only common safe oils are avocado, olive, coconut/palm, and animal fat. Especially critical is to eliminate all trans-fats of any kind. Small amounts of fish oil and krill oil are useful, but even they become dangerous once they are heated or exposed to the
air.
Once you have mastered eliminating these evil killers from your diet, the next demon to eliminate is sugar. That quest is a newsletter all to itself. So in the mean time…
Good journey,
David
Ellen update:
Another step forward for Ellen! We have been working out her leg muscles each morning by doing squats. She has been using her arms to help herself up by holding onto my hands. A byproduct of this is that her left arm is also getting stronger - strong enough to help her hold onto a standard walker
enabling her to walk slowly for a bit using the walker. Up to this point she could not do this because the left arm could not hold on to the walker.

SkinGun sprays stem cells onto burns
Healing burns is very difficult. A miraculous new tool to greatly speed burn recovery is a gun that sprays a layer of your own stem cells over the wound. The gun is so gentle that 97% of the cells applied are viable and able to form new skin. New skin begins to form in as little as four days compared to weeks of work needed for skin grafts. Even more importantly the SkinGun can process the stem cells
and treat a wound in as little as 90 minutes - critically important in this type of wound.

The newest "drugs" may be bugs
A ton of research is being done on the bacteria in our guts as both a cause and a cure for many different diseases. It is well established that consuming probiotic bacteria is health helpful for us. Drug companies are jumping on the band wagon by trying to come up with genetically modified gut bacteria that can be put into pills to treat specific diseases. The bugs have to be genetically modified to enable the drug
companies to patent their products as natural helpful bacteria can not be patented. These products are already being developed, so your next treatment for obesity or heart disease may be a week of pills filled with bacteria.

Many eco-friendly cleaning products are actually toxic
EWG - the Environmental Working Group has released an expanded guide to cleaning products, and many of the brands we associate with eco-friendly health are in fact toxic. The link below will take you to the EWG site so you can check out the safety of your current products. At the office and at home we pretty much stick to vinegar and water, castile soap, and products I make for us from ingredients I know are
safe.

Our address is 9725 Fair Oaks Blvd. suite A
Our hours are M - F 9 to 1 and M, Tu, & Th 3 to 6
Finding the new location is very easy. Coming from highway 50 up Sunrise Blvd, you turn left and go up a block. We are on the right hand side - the building just past the Subway Sandwich shop. If you are coming down Sunrise from the Mall area then just turn right on Fair Oaks Blvd and up a block on the right.
If you are coming from the Roseville area you could come down Sunrise Blvd, but that is a long trek. It is probably shorter time wise to come down Auburn Blvd - San Juan Ave like you have been for the Sunset office, but instead of turning left at Sunset, keep going straight 3 more lights to Fair Oaks Blvd and turn left. Go down 2 lights to New York Ave, go through the intersection, and immediately turn into the turn lane once the center
divider ends. We are on the left.
