Peripheral Neuropathy

 Hi ,

About a year ago I started to notice that it felt like my socks were bunching up under my toes.  It was quite annoying, but I didn't really think anything of it.  Then I noticed that it felt like I was standing on small gravel while wearing my shoes.  I would take off my shoes and shake them out, but wouldn't find anything.  Finally when it began feeling like I had paper wadded up between my toes, even when I was barefoot, I figured out what was happening.  Something was messing with the nerves in my feet.

I did a little research on the Internet to confirm my suspicions, and sure enough I was showing the early signs of peripheral neuropathy.  This possibility was not on my radar because I only associated it with diabetes.  But the research revealed that various autoimmune disorders would also create peripheral neuropathy.  I did lab tests to confirm my diagnosis and sure enough found I had antibodies against a part of my nerves.

My philosophy is to tackle any such findings head on as the earlier you address problems the better your results.  But what could one do for peripheral neuropathy.  I was already doing everything known for calming down autoimmune troubles.  I needed something else.  Conventional medicine has nothing for this problem.  More research revealed two basic approaches in the alternative health community - improve circulation in the area and improve nerve stimulation and communication in the area.

What is peripheral neuropathy?  In plain language, it means the nerves in the parts of the body furthest from the center are rotting away.  The two main causes for this are the nerve endings are being turned into candy by too much sugar in the blood or the nerve ends are dying because of not enough oxygen due to poor blood supply.  Both of these are common problems with diabetes.  My situation is uncommon in that my immune system is chewing up the nerve endings in my feet.

In reviewing the various options available for treatment, I decided on a device called the Rebuilder.  It has been around for about 30 years and seems to have a good track record with patients and is used by many doctors for treating their patients with peripheral neuropathy.  I mentioned to a few patients that I was investigating this device and I was startled at how many people have the same problem.  No one ever mentions it to me I guess because they have already been told by their medical doctors that they just have to live with it.  One fellow told me his neuropathy was so bad that he could only walk on his feet for about an hour a day before the pain got too bad to bear.  I did not know that the problem could eventually get to be that bad.

Pains in the feet are really debilitating.  I discovered that a couple years back when I got plantar fasciitis for a few months.  It is hard to do anything on your feet.  Knowing this is a common outcome of diabetes is just another powerful motivator to stay off sugar, carbs, and MSG as these all create diabetes.  It is hard to do this since everything we think tastes good in our western diet has one or all of these in it.  Recalling the pain and disability outcome of indulging in the good taste requires a special kind of forethought and wisdom - one worth cultivating if we want to avoid the painful consequences.

So what does the treatment do?  As the name implies, it is designed to rebuild the damaged nerves.  It does this with specific waveforms of electrical energy that stimulate the firing of the sensory nerves in the afflicted area.  The device actually reads the conductivity of the nerves and sends out an appropriate amount of energy to stimulate firing seven times per second.  The stimulus travels up one leg, to the spine and then back down the opposite leg to the other contact pad and then reverses direction.  This stimulates the nerves to form new and longer connections with each other to create a stronger nerve synapse.  It is in the synapse that the damage from poor blood supply or too much sugar takes place.

A second feature of the Rebuilder is the use of EDTA*. In the office, application of the device will be accomplished in a foot bath.  The device drives the EDTA into the tiny blood vessels of the feet where it cleans out blockages caused by hardening of the arteries.  EDTA chelates the calcium in the artery walls and carries it out of the system.  This promotes a better blood supply to the damaged nerves to help them heal.

I bought both an office unit and a home unit with which to treat myself.  They recommend a seven week treatment program with twice daily treatments at home using electro-conductive socks and twice weekly treatments in the office with the EDTA in the foot bath.  Since my neuralgia was auto-immune based, I did not know if I would see the results they expected, as they get an 85% to 98% recovery/ improvement rate with the more typical causes of neuropathy.  I got about a 50% improvement in the weird feelings in my feet.

Since it helped me, I am ready to bring this therapy into the office for my patients.  We set up the program just as the makers of the device recommend - seven weeks at home and in the office.  You buy a pair of the special electro-conductive socks for $150 and rent the home Rebuilder unit for $35 per week.  You also come into the office twice a week for a foot bath session with Hyla for $25 a session.  I have priced this extremely low to make it more affordable for my patients, as the folks at Rebuilder suggest rentals of $40 to $50 per week and office visits of up to $178.  Additionally, I will be offering patients who wish purchase the home unit the opportunity pay off the balance owed after the seven weeks of use.  The cost of the units is $530, which would leave $285 after the seven week rental period.  The reason you may want to purchase this unit is because the process that created the peripheral neuralgia, like diabetes, is not changed by the treatment - just the damaged nerves.  So chances are you will recreate more damage in the future and may need further treatments to keep your feet happy.  Here is the store web page for Rebuilder medical so you can see all their products.

The big advantage to renting is that it takes the big-money-up-front risk out of the treatment.  And if you don't get the results you desire or  you aren't starting to see results after a few weeks, you can stop using it and not continue to rent the unit.  I didn't get that option when I tried it, but I can set it up that way for you.

If you are interested, come by the office and leave a check for the cost of the socks and three weeks of rental, and I will purchase a home unit from Rebuilder Medical for you to use as the rental.  That way I am not out as much cash up front.  I make my profit from the in- office treatments once I have paid off the cost of the office machine.  Plus you may decide you need a Chiropractic treatment some of the times you are over for your foot bath treatment.

I think I have made this as win-win as possible.  So if you have peripheral neuralgia or know someone who does, here is a great opportunity for some help.

         Colloidal Silver

The flu and cold season is upon us and the best remedy I know is a couple ounces of colloidal silver every hour till it dissipates.  Usually for me that is about four hours.  We have new 8 ounce bottles of colloidal silver in the office for only $8 - a tiny fraction of the price elsewhere.  Plus refills are only $4.  Or if you have a  large crew to care for we have a limited number of one gallon containers for only $30.
  Pick some up today.

Important TED talk for parents

One of my patients forwarded this TED talk to me (thanks Leslie) a few days ago.  The message is profoundly important for parents to understand what actually works to make your child a success in life.

Sugar worse than salt in high blood pressure

A review of numerous recent studies is pointing the finger at fructose in sugar as a bigger culprit in causing high blood pressure and heart disease than salt.  In some cardiac cases salt restriction actually makes things worse.  Most researchers say both need to be reduced.

Milkweed for oil spills

In a discovery that will make Monarch butterflies happy, it has been found that the fibers of the milkweed plant work better than the currently used man-made fibers for soaking up oil spills.  Milkweed is the necessary food for the Monarch butterfly, but supplies have been dwindling as agricultural weed spraying is destroying it.  Now it may become a crop itself.

Our address is  9725 Fair Oaks Blvd.
Finding the new location is very easy.  Coming from highway 50 up Sunrise Blvd, you turn left and go up a block.  We are on the right hand side - the building just past the Subway Sandwich shop.  If you are coming down Sunrise from the Mall area then just turn right on Fair Oaks Blvd and up a block on the right.

If you are coming from the Roseville area you could come down Sunrise Blvd, but that is a long trek.  It is probably shorter time wise to come down Auburn Blvd - San Juan Ave like you have been for the Sunset office, but instead of turning left at Sunset, keep going straight 3 more lights to Fair Oaks Blvd and turn left.  Go down 2 lights to New York Ave, go through the intersection, and immediately turn into the turn lane once the center divider ends.  We are on the left.
