Ellen Update

 Hi ,

Ellen had her surgery Wednesday down at UCSF.  We checked in at 6:30 in the morning expecting the usual "sit around and wait until you are called" process.  UCSF acts more like a cruise ship in the surgery department with super nice people ushering you along the process every step of the way.  I was able to be with Ellen until the came to wheel her into the surgery.  Then they send me down to a very nice waiting area where they have two people dedicated to keeping family members updated on the surgery progress.

Ellen's surgery took from 8:30 till about 2:00pm.  Instead of sitting, I went walking to Golden Gate Park and picked up some raspberries and strawberries at a farmers market.  The hospital kept in touch with me via cell phone.  At 2 I talked to Ellen's surgeon about the procedure.  He was very pleased with the outcome.  He said she lost very little blood and did so well that they decided she would not need to spend the first couple days in ICU like they were expecting, but could be put in a normal room.

After waiting an hour and a half for Ellen to come up out of the anesthesia I went up to the post-op care unit to be with her until a room was ready for her.  Anesthesia makes you act like you are a bit drunk in that your short term memory is shot so you tend to repeat yourself and ask the same questions over several times because you don't remember that you have already asked them and gotten the answers.  The surgical team - and I do mean team as there were over a dozen people up there with her - hooked her up with spinal epidural that made the middle of her body numb so she would not feel the pain of the surgery for the first few days.

We finally got Ellen up to a room about 5pm where I sat with her until I had to head back home at 8pm.  She was feeling pretty nauseous when I left, but the tube down her nose was draining all the fluid out of her stomach so there was nothing to throw up.  That first day or two after the surgery is the worst.  I will be back down to be with her this weekend.

.Thank you all for the prayers and love you have expressed.

David
