Toys

 Hi ,

When I want to feel good I look for something to play with.  Sometimes I like the comfort of an old familiar toy.  Other times I want something new and exciting.  New toys offer the promise of new and better feelings.  The chance to play with the latest and greatest new toy fills the need we have to always be moving forward.  We always want more until we reach the mythical day when we are complete and satisfied.

To get a new toy I have to go to the toy store to see what is out on the shelves.  The boxes of toys are attractively displayed everywhere.  The pictures on the boxes make the toys inside look amazing.  They spark my imagination as I picture myself feeling wonderful as I play with the toy just like the box shows.  The store has put prices on the boxes portraying what they want me to believe is the relative value of what is inside each box.  I count up what I have in my pocket to see if I can afford the new toy, and if I have enough, I take the box to the register and purchase it.

Now the excitement is really building, as I can't wait to get the box home and open it up, get the toy out, and start playing with it.  My imagination runs wild as I picture how good I am going to feel once I get to play with my new toy.  I am in love!  I love the excitement, the anticipation, the joy at having a new toy to play with.

Finally I get home and rush to my bedroom to open the box and start playing with the new toy.  At this point, one of several things might take place.

The packaging might be so tough that I can't get the box open.  Even though I try and try and try some more, I just can't get the package open.  I can't reach the toy inside that I want to play with.  I may just throw the box away in frustration, which would be a good thing because then I would be free to try another toy.  Or I may decide that I spent good money on this toy and I am going to keep it on my shelf.  I own it.  It's mine.  Even if I can't play with it and all it does is give me aggravation every time I look at it, I am not willing to let it go.

Another possibility is that I open the box easily enough, but there is nothing inside.  Or, what is inside is so much less than what the box promised that either way, all I get is a huge disappointment.  The box was so attractive and promised so much fun, but the toy inside was a total rip-off.  No play for me.

A third possibility is that the toy I was hoping for is there inside the box, but it is broken.  It does not work.  I looks like it should be really cool to play with, but it doesn't work.  I try to fix it.  I spend hours and hours trying to fix it, but it just does not do what the box shows it should be able to do.  Still, there is no play for me.  I am not getting the good feelings I am after through the play I want.

A fourth possibility, and the one I personally seem to encounter most often, is the box opens; the toy is there, but the instruction manual is either missing or in a foreign language.  The toy might be able to give me the play I want if I can just figure out how it works.  What follows is a long period of trial and error as I try to get the toy to work the way it showed on the box, so I can play with it.  I might be successful or I might not.  Generally I get small excitements as I get one little piece figured out at a time.  Eventually my hope is that I will finally get it all figured out and then I will be able to play and get the fun I am after.

I have been told and have hope of the fifth possibility - that I open the box and the toy is everything I hoped it would be.  I take it out and play and play and play until I am fully happy.  I haven't found a toy like that yet.  In fact, I don't actually know anybody that has had that experience. But TV and movies and books keep insisting that these toys are out there.  Are they really out there?  Or is that just Madison Avenue marketing hype designed to keep us buying more toys hoping for the one that will do it all for us?  I don't know.

So the question is - are these toys worth what we pay for them?  We buy them hoping they will be like the fifth possibility.  The only value for us is in the play we are wanting to have.

If I were the toy, I would think I had full value because I would have to believe my packaging just like the person buying me.  Since I am a new toy, I have no idea how well I function.  My retailer tells me I have value based on my ability to sell.  The retailer does not care whether I work or not - only if I can sell myself.  If I do not know how to be attractive to the buyers, I will believe I don't have value even though I might be a great toy inside.

So here we have the dilemma.  We ascribe value to something based on how attractive it is at the time of purchase.  But the only real value something has is how well we are able to participate with it - play with it.  Yes, we enjoy the excitement of anticipation - the "In love" phase of a purchase before we actually open the box.  But that is brief.  True value is in the play, not in the anticipation.

I have no answers for this dilemma, just awareness that it exists.  Only time and experience seems to allow us to collect the participation we need to play out our fulfillment story through our relationships with our toys (and people).

Take care,

David

P.S. This article is a parable about human relationships.

A short-term diet of junk food can irreversibly damage memory

A new study from Australia on rats has shown very rapid damage to the rats cognitive ability and permanent damage to certain types of memory.  Since rat brain chemistry is very similar to humans it is believed similar damage may be happening to humans.

Meditation as good as antidepressants for depression and anxiety

Mindfulness meditation has been found to produce improvements equivalent to drug therapy for depression and anxiety in this recent John Hopkins University study.  Of particular value in this study was that the placebo effect was also measured and the meditation had far more impact than just placebo.

How to be happier - Exercise!

Comparing drugs to exercise has been done before and both are known to lift our spirits.  But this interesting study studied each alone and both together.  All showed about the same improvement.  The really interesting finding came when they checked the people 6 months later to see how many had relapsed into their depression.  Both the drug group and the drug plus exercise group showed about a 38% relapse rate, while the exercise only group only showed a 9% relapse rate!

Our address is  9725 Fair Oaks Blvd.
Finding the new location is very easy.  Coming from highway 50 up Sunrise Blvd, you turn left and go up a block.  We are on the right hand side - the building just past the Subway Sandwich shop.  If you are coming down Sunrise from the Mall area then just turn right on Fair Oaks Blvd and up a block on the right.

If you are coming from the Roseville area you could come down Sunrise Blvd, but that is a long trek.  It is probably shorter time wise to come down Auburn Blvd - San Juan Ave like you have been for the Sunset office, but instead of turning left at Sunset, keep going straight 3 more lights to Fair Oaks Blvd and turn left.  Go down 2 lights to New York Ave, go through the intersection, and immediately turn into the turn lane once the center divider ends.  We are on the left.
