Empty Bowls

 Hi ,

A couple weeks ago Ellen and I participated in part of a local fundraiser for the River City Food Bank - The Empty Bowls program.  We did this last year and had a great time.  The design of the program is beautiful.  It takes place in two parts - the making of the bowls and then the gifting of the bowls at a charity luncheon and dinner.

We participated in the bowl making portion of the program.  What first attracted us was the opportunity to create a fused glass bowl.  Fused glass is an art form we both love but have never pursued due to the high cost of glass fusing furnaces.  But Laurie Lee at Stellar Studios (https://www.facebook.com/stellarstudios.sacramento) provided the glass studio for all us budding artists to create within.  We each put down $25 for each bowl we want to make.  The first bowl is to donate to the Empty Bowls charity fundraiser dinner and the second bowl we get to keep.

We showed up at our designated timeslot (12 to 1:30 group) and were provided with everything we needed to create either a round or a square 6-inch bowl.  We began with a double base layer of opaque and clear glass.  This served as our "canvas" onto which we arranged bit and pieces of other colored glass of all sorts.  There were so many interesting and beautiful types of glass of all sorts and shapes.  We could cut the glass if we wanted or just use it as it was.

As our arrangements came into place we would glue the pieces onto the base glass with super glue.  Then once the design was complete we would transfer the final masterpiece to the huge glass fusing furnace.

Part of the fun of this process is that you have no idea what the finished piece will look like.  As the glass melts and fuses the colors blend in unpredictable ways.  Plus the fusing process takes place in two steps - first it is fused into a flat piece then the flat pieces are laid over a mold and heated until the slump into the mold shape.  This last slumping process produces an extra layer if glass twisting and color mixing that really changes things up.

Last year when we went to the follow-up potluck to pick up the bowls we were keeping, it took me forever to try to figure out which bowl I had made.  Fortunately our names were on a card under each bowl to let us know which was ours, but still I had to turn over dozens of bowls before I found mine.

This year I was a little cleverer in that I took pictures of our original pieces before they went into the furnace to serve as somewhat of a color guide.  But even with these pictures it took a bit to find my bowls.

Now if you would like to get in on the charity luncheon or dinner then please go to the website for the River City Food Bank for tickets.  If you go to the dinner you will then also receive one of the bowls as a thank you for your donation.  Last year this event raised $100,000 to help feed struggling families in Sacramento County.  Their goal for this year is $130,000.

Classique Catering and a whole bunch of Sacramento's top restaurants are providing the meals.  This is a win-win opportunity to serve your community on both ends of the event.  We had a great time creating the bowls and we got to make some for ourselves and everyone else will get a chance to dine on some fabulous food and take home an empty bowl of their own.  The bowls are both beautiful and serve to represent the purpose of the event - to fill the empty bowls in Sacramento County so that no one needs to go hungry.

Take care,

David

Sweat glands heal injuries

The bright promise of the future is that we can heal our tissues with stem cells.  The challenge up to this point is to harvest these special cells and then convince them to turn into just the types of cells we need.  We have been getting pretty good at promoting stem cells to form a single type of new replacement cell and this has been used to form things like new bladders for people.  But most tissues are a complex mix of many types of cells - tissue, blood vessel, nerve, and so on.  Well now it has been found that gland cells - even sweat gland cells naturally do just this.  This has not been studied in the past because lab animals have almost no sweat glands, but humans have lots.

Diet and not exercise important for reducing dangerous abdominal fat

The mantra for years is that it does not matter what you eat if you exercise enough to burn it off.  Not so according to the latest study.  For dangerous abdominal fat the key seems to be the consumption of vegetable oils, and no amount of exercise changed that.  Saturated fat did not increase abdominal fat, only the polyunsaturated fats that caused the problem.

3 Foods Linked with Depression

This Live Science article looks at three foods that have been clinically linked with depression.  What are the big three?  Naturally they are our favorite foods - refined carbohydrates like bread, pasta, and bagels - soft drinks - and fast food of all sorts.  All these foods smack our blood sugar around and promote brain inflammation so it is no wonder they also cause depression.

Our address is  9725 Fair Oaks Blvd.
Finding the new location is very easy.  Coming from highway 50 up Sunrise Blvd, you turn left and go up a block.  We are on the right hand side - the building just past the Subway Sandwich shop.  If you are coming down Sunrise from the Mall area then just turn right on Fair Oaks Blvd and up a block on the right.

If you are coming from the Roseville area you could come down Sunrise Blvd, but that is a long trek.  It is probably shorter time wise to come down Auburn Blvd - San Juan Ave like you have been for the Sunset office, but instead of turning left at Sunset, keep going straight 3 more lights to Fair Oaks Blvd and turn left.  Go down 2 lights to New York Ave, go through the intersection, and immediately turn into the turn lane once the center divider ends.  We are on the left.
