Success in 2014

 Hi ,

I am writing this on New Years Day.  It is 5:15 in the evening right now.  As I sit here I am feeling that I want to start the New Year with a message that will help open the door to success for each of us in this New Year.  I am trusting that whatever that message is will flow through me as I sit here.

I have been in conversation all day with Ellen about what it takes to turn your life around and become successful at anything.  We spend days like this frequently; a question comes up prompted by some life experience.  Inevitably we end up in a day-long contemplation on that question.  She or I will ask questions about the topic and do some muscle testing to get some answers.  Then we will go about our daily activities until a new set of questions bubble up.  We have to feel into the answers for a bit and feel how the answers apply to us.  This generates a new set of questions, and round we go until resolution is achieved.

We all get stuck in our lives.  We repeat loops of behavior that we know perfectly well will not make us happy or get us what we want.  Ellen and I start with the belief that none of us are stupid, so that means that the stuck pattern of behavior must serve to support something inside of us that we are not in touch with.  Finding these behind-the-scenes motivators for our odd behavior are the source for a lot of our questions we muscle test.

Most frequently the answers come down to
beliefs we picked up as kids about how things are "supposed" to work that don't actually have anything to do with reality today.  We hope our beliefs will guide us successfully to the life that fulfills our happiness.  We have a complex set of feeling-relationships inside ourselves that have that "right" feel to them.  It is like we know that if others would just treat us a certain way or life worked for us a certain way, then we would be happy.  I believe these feeling-relationships are hardwired into our brains at birth.  We then spend the rest of our life trying to figure our how to make these relationships come true.

The core problem with this set up is that these relationships are seen or felt by us as though we are behind the camera taking pictures of them.  We don't see ourselves in the pictures, only everybody else. We are at the center of our world looking outward, trying to figure out how to get "out there" to line up and fulfill the roles in our feeling-relationships correctly.  This becomes a problem. It's often the biggest reason we do not achieve the happiness we want.

Let's use a common desire as an example. Most kids and many adults want to be the center of attention.  The child knows with absolute certainty that being center is the right relationship for getting his or her needs met.  So the child has very clear pictures about how parents are supposed to act.  They should be doting on the child every moment and anticipating the child's needs before the child even thinks of them.  After all, this is how it was in the womb.  Everything the child needed or wanted was provided all the time and without any participation on the child's part.  As that child's brain was forming, this was the experience of rightness that was laid down in that brain.

Let's flash forward a few years.  Now the child's needs are getting pretty complex.  Since the child is completely dependent on the parents for everything, the level of participation the parents have to engage in to try to anticipate the child's needs and wants is immense.  Plus anything the parent does will not be based on what the child actually wants, as the parents are not mind readers.  The parents can only guess what the child wants.

Because of the problem I mentioned earlier of not seeing ourselves in the picture in our relationships, we don't get it that everything we receive in relationships flows from what we put out.  We have to communicate.  We have to participate.  We are not the center of our parent's world.  As much as they would like us to believe we are the center, they are just kids themselves in bigger bodies.  They still have themselves at the center of their world and they are still trying to figure out how to get life to arrange the "right" relationships and circumstances to make them happy.

Here is the big clincher; it is impossible for them to meet our needs the way we want because they can only see life from their own perspective - not ours.  They are not inside of us, feeling what we are feeling.  No one ever is.  We deny this truth profoundly.  We have created a whole myth, industry, and societal belief around the lie that another person can see life as though they were us.  We call it "falling in love" when we are living the lie.  The illusion can only hold up for so long against the stark reality that the other person is difference from us.  Most relationships fall into a many-year-long-battle and power struggle of trying to force the other person to be like us, believe what we believe, think the way we think, share our values, and make the choices we would make.

Why do we do this?  Because we refuse to let go of that child desire to be the center and have our needs and wants met without our having to do anything.  What is the alternative?  The alternative is the secret to success in this life.

When we have had enough disappointment, anger, frustration, and grief over life not being the way we want, we have the choice to do things differently.  We can let go of the child illusion of being the center that life should flow towards.  Instead we can step boldly into being the creator of our life through our own efforts.

We can take on the truth that we and only we are responsible for creating the relationships we want with life.  We have to show up and participate in a way that has meaning and value to those that want to create life with us.  We can't force anyone to value us or want to participate with us.  We have to shine out with our energy and effort in ways that flow from our heart, so that we will show the natural joy that comes from doing what we are designed to do.

Joy is attractive and encourages people to want to participate with us.  Life is a co-creation.  None of us can create a happy life on our own.  We are in this all together.  Why?  Our happiness lies in manifesting those inner feeling-relationships outwardly in our lives with others.

This is the deep and true level of successful happiness in human life.  But this same reality can be used in approaching anything you want to accomplish.  Let's use the most common goal expressed on New Year's Eve as an example; the desire to get fit and lose weight.  To even have any chance at all of being successful, you have to first ask why do you want this?  If there is one thing I have learned over the last 31 years of being a doctor, it is that health does not motivate anyone to get fit or lose weight.

To be successful at getting fit and losing weight, that goal has to lead you directly to supporting the creation of the "right" feeling relationships in your life.  Losing weight is easy when you are single and actively looking to catch the eye of a potential mate (usually).  But if you are working from the child desire to be center, then the inner message you will be running is that you should not have to get fit or lose weight to attract a mate.  So a couple weeks into the New Year, the diet fails and the new gym shoes don't even get broken in.

To put it simply, to be successful this coming year you have to make your goals line up with what really motivates you - your personal "right" feeling relationships with life.  You have to do this from the feeling and experiential understanding that you have to be the one that lives out the life you want.  You make it happen through your shining and participation in the creation process of others.  Alone creations are generally not motivating.

That is my New Year's message.  Happiness and fulfillment can be yours no matter what your life circumstances are.  Happiness is in the relationships, not the circumstances.  Put yourselves in your life pictures and shine out with the gifts of your life experiences and joyful feelings.  Become the fulfillment of your dreams yourself.

Happy New Year,

David

Vitamin D deficiency linked to IBS, depression, pain, and cancer.

Vitamin D is not actually a vitamin.  It is a hormone that influences over 3000 different genes in your body.  Thousands of research studies have defined the beneficial effects of D and also shown that low levels of D are related to many different disease processes.  The recommended daily dose of D has been 400 IU for decades but now that RDA is being upped to between 2000 and 4000 IU per day for most people.  If you have an autoimmune disorder that number has been upped to 10,000 IU per day.

Pregnancy D levels affect children's muscle strength

This recent study has shown that higher levels of vitamin D in the last half of pregnancy resulted in children with greater muscle strength at 4 years of age.  Researchers believe that this increase will likely persist throughout the child's life resulting in healthier adults.  The research was stimulated by concerns for the dropping levels of D in the population as people have become more afraid of sun exposure, which is necessary for our bodies to make vitamin D.

Happiness Secret: Help someone

Numerous studies have been done on what works to make us happier.  Consistently it is found that doing a kindness for someone else is the most reliable way to boost your own happiness.  One author has written that there seems to be an optimal level of 2 hours per week or 15 to 20 minutes per day for this effect and further studies suggest that several small 5 minute kindnesses per day boosts our productivity and mood.  There are often many opportunities where just a little time on our part can have a big impact on someone's day.

Our address is  9725 Fair Oaks Blvd.
Finding the new location is very easy.  Coming from highway 50 up Sunrise Blvd, you turn left and go up a block.  We are on the right hand side - the building just past the Subway Sandwich shop.  If you are coming down Sunrise from the Mall area then just turn right on Fair Oaks Blvd and up a block on the right.

If you are coming from the Roseville area you could come down Sunrise Blvd, but that is a long trek.  It is probably shorter time wise to come down Auburn Blvd - San Juan Ave like you have been for the Sunset office, but instead of turning left at Sunset, keep going straight 3 more lights to Fair Oaks Blvd and turn left.  Go down 2 lights to New York Ave, go through the intersection, and immediately turn into the turn lane once the center divider ends.  We are on the left.
