What is truth?

 Hi ,

What is truth?  This is not the simple question it seems to be.  Philosophers have been arguing this question for thousands of years.  From my personal observation, most philosophical arguments are just word battles.  The fight stems from the fact that everyone has their own personal meaning for each word in a language and most arguments are really just arguing over different meanings for the same word.  Although individuals like to believe they all share a common language when they talk, they don't.  Language is very personal and its word meanings are based on personal experiences related to the words.

That being the case, I would like to express my meaning for the word truth.  Truth is different from facts.  Facts are actual realities that exist independently from any observers.  Truth begins in the grasping of some fact and its relevance to you the observer.  When we see a fact as persisting over time, it becomes relevant to us.  We call such things truth.  Part of the feeling of truth is that true things are immutable and fixed.

This immediately creates problems because we are finite creatures so we have no way of assessing if something is immutable.  Just because some fact has always been true in our experience of the past does not say anything about it in the future.  That immediately points out that things we label as true are based in beliefs we hold about those things.  So truth is really just a belief.  We cannot assess whether anything is true forever, as we are not around for forever.

Someone might say that the past is fixed and therefore we can find truth in the past.  I say no.  There are too many examples of things that we believed were true in the past that new evidence has show us a new truth.  The past is not much more real than the future as our past is really only our memory of the past.  Science has shown that our memories change every time we remember them.

There are many arguments that demonstrate that we can't really know anything is true, only that we perceive it as such.  So we simply have to bypass that level of things and simply accept that truth is tied to a belief we hold about the persistent nature of something.  Because perception occurs firmly between our ears, what is truth for us may not be truth for anyone else.  I believe this reality is why people spend so much time trying to get everyone else to agree with them about what is truth.  This behavior is the basis of most human conflict and war.  The feeling of having to face life knowing that your truth belongs only to you is so scary, that you demand others agree with you in order to create reality by consensus.   With a consensus reality operating, we can feel confident in choosing courses of action for ourselves that we believe will give predictable results.

This stuff is all background processing that we have dumped mostly into the subconscious mind.  So let's get to the "street level" truth.

Truth for us is really a set of beliefs about what is - or at least what we believe is.  For instance we can say that it is true that the sun rises in the east and sets in the west.  Functionally this works for us as we orient ourselves in our daily life.  In reality the sun doesn't rise or set at all.  It is stationary and only appears to rise and fall - it is actually the earth spinning relative to the sun that creates this illusion.  But this is not the "truth" for most people.  The rising in the east perception serves folks better than the spinning in space model, so rising in the east is their truth.

What I am getting at here is that truth is really a set of perceptions that serves us as we create our daily experience story.  Truth is those "facts" that relate to us in a way that supports our personal story by providing reliable points of reference.  While our "truth" provides us a container / a stage / a support system for our conscious and unconscious agendas so we can grow, it also at some point becomes our prison.  Because we believe truth is a fixed reality rather than a personal set of beliefs, when we grow too big for our reality we become trapped.

The only way out is to accept that truth is changeable depending upon whatever "stage setting" we need in which to grow.  Truth is relevant to our particular growth needs.  We need to believe in certain things and accept them as truth for the growth we are doing at that time.  As we advance, "truth" changes because we change.  Truth is about personal relevance.  There are billions of truths out there, all that matters is what is relevant to us.  And what is relevant today may not be relevant tomorrow.

Old truths become irrelevant all the time.  The tooth fairy and Easter bunny give way to truths like justice and fairness, which in turn gives way to karmic balance, which in turn gives way to God's will be done.  Each is a necessary truth in its time to fit the learning we are doing at that time.  It is a necessary progression of grasped truths.  Letting go of old truths is usually painful and frightening.  We are released into a bigger playground that feels intimidating until we learn how to play by the new rules - the new truths.  Don't rush it.  It all unfolds it its own time.

What is the advantage of knowing any of this?  When fully appreciated, it allows you much more room in your heart for all the people that have different truths than yourself (and that is everyone.)  Their truths are built out of what they need to do their work where they are right now.  You can have tolerance for their different truths once you grasp that you will have different truths than you have right now as you progress down your own path.  Everyone is just where they are, just like you are where you are - No big deal.

How to find us -

Our address is  9725 Fair Oaks Blvd.
Finding the new location is very easy.  Coming from highway 50 up Sunrise Blvd, you turn left and go up a block.  We are on the right hand side - the building just past the Subway Sandwich shop.  If you are coming down Sunrise from the Mall area then just turn right on Fair Oaks Blvd and up a block on the right.

If you are coming from the Roseville area you could come down Sunrise Blvd, but that is a long trek.  It is probably shorter time wise to come down Auburn Blvd - San Juan Ave like you have been for the Sunset office, but instead of turning left at Sunset, keep going straight 3 more lights to Fair Oaks Blvd and turn left.  Go down 2 lights to New York Ave, go through the intersection, and immediately turn into the turn lane once the center divider ends.  We are on the left.

On the Wire
Mind Reading Computer

For the first time scientists have been able to identify what emotions a person was feeling based on special brain scans.  Different emotions activate different areas of the brain.  Using functional magnetic resonance imaging they can now see what brain regions are turned on with each emotion and can use this information to read what you are feeling, including subconscious feelings.  You can now be hooked up to a machine and researchers can tell how you feel about a product, a political candidate, or anything else.

Beet Kvass

Many times I have written about the health benefits of fermented foods.  Kvass is a traditional fermented beverage from Russia and Eastern Europe.  Typically it is made from rye bread, but this simple recipe is made with beets.  Enjoy
