Cognitive Decline
Hi ,
Loss of your ability to remember, think clearly, solve problems, and live functionally is becoming an epidemic. Alzheimer's, dementia, ADD and Chemo brain is everywhere and it is happening at earlier and earlier ages. New research finds that the early stages of cognitive decline show symptoms and can be tested 20 to 30 years before it becomes a life-crippling problem. More importantly, by catching it early you can do something about it.
Do you have any of these symptoms? Yes, I know that we want to think that these are normal some of the time, but they really aren't.
Feeling unusually disorganized
Difficulty with concentration
Trouble remembering peoples names
Frequently misplacing things
Difficulty doing several tasks at a time
Getting bogged down with routine tasks
Short attention span
Difficulty reading for long periods of time
Difficulty recalling the right word you want to use
Trouble remembering your shopping list
Feeling exhausted
You become more impulsive or show increasingly poor judgment
Not remembering old TV shows/movies you have seen
Trouble recalling conversations
Difficulty recalling how to drive to places you have been before
Mental fogginess
Confusion in learning new skills
You lose your train of thought or the thread of conversations
Forgetting important events such as appointments or social engagements

Cognitive decline producing mild cognitive impairment comes from the same brain changes that other dementias show such as amyloid protein plaque buildup on the nerves, reduced blood flow in the brain, and loss of normal glucose usage for energy. In CD (cognitive decline) the degenerative changes are simply at a much earlier stage. In terms of underlying metabolic and other causes, I have recognized at least 15 different causes that can all be addressed naturally to varying degrees.
Most of the causes of CD are the same causes that underlie poor health everywhere else in the body. Some of the corrections are the same as for other health issues in the body. However the brain has some special needs. Because the brain is isolated from the rest of the body by the blood-brain barrier, it requires some special handling.

Modern medicine considers some degree of cognitive decline to be a normal part of aging. While it may be typical because people do not take care of themselves, it should not be normal. Healthy should be normal, but medicine sees that healthy is not what most people do. The modern American diet and lifestyle promotes brain degeneration. It is no wonder that serious brain disorders are becoming normal.
The speech pathology seminar on cognitive fog I attended a few weekends ago introduced me to a series of simple verbal tests for checking four types of memory. With these tests we can easily assess a person's key memory capabilities to determine if they are showing signs of early memory loss. A positive finding on these tests would tell me that now is the time to start working on building up the patient's health to ward off further memory decline as much as possible. This testing will soon be available in the office. It should only take 20 to 30 minutes, and you can simply call for an appointment with Hyla for this. Leave yourself about an hour for this, because if your test shows cognitive decline, we will then have you fill out a neurotransmitter and a metabolic symptom assessment to guide us in choosing the best place to start in treating the decline.

Generally such actions as forgetting where you put your keys is not as significant as forgetting such things as appointments, conversations, or recent events. These are more likely an early sign of Alzheimer's - typically becoming full blown in 7 to 10 years.
So what are the possible causes of cognitive decline?
Brain blood flow decrease
Brain blood sugar metabolism/brain diabetes
Brain inflammation
Food allergies/brain histamine reactions
Hormonal imbalances
Psychological stress
Neurotransmitter deficits
Poisoning from heavy metals/chemicals/chemo
Drugs/alcohol/weed/psychotropic drugs
Meridian/brain hemispheric dominance imbalance
Head injury/concussions
Nutritional deficit
Disuse atrophy
Gut brain inflammation
Emotional relationship agenda
These are the therapeutic targets for natural intervention. Specific diet, lifestyle, nutritional supplement, therapeutic, and consciousness applications and shifts can make a world of difference in the functioning of the brains of these patients.

What about the impact of genetics - certain genes like the APOE e4 create a greater sensitivity to the development of Alzheimer's. But what that really means is that people with that gene are more susceptible to damage from the causes already mentioned. The gene does not cause the disease unless the disease is present at birth. Late onset genetically related diseases are really about impaired ability to eliminate poisons most of the time. They are not a prewritten script that means you will get a disease. Bad genes just mean you have to be more careful than the average person to compensate for the weakness the gene creates.
Improving brain health by improving whole body health is the approach I am promoting. One of my favorite truths is that "Everything affects everything else." Nothing shows this as clearly as the interactions between the brain and the body. Now that we have a simple test to check memory function, I am looking forward to helping many more people improve their health.
Take care,
David
We will be on vacation the last week of September 9/21 to 9/29.
Skinny Muffins
My patient Zee brought me her recipe for a high fiber simple to make muffin for a quick treat in the morning - or whenever - that you make right in a coffee mug. From beginning to end it only take 2 minutes and the muffin does not even stick to the mug!
1/4 cup ground flax seed
1 teaspoon baking powder (aluminum free)
1 teaspoon coconut oil
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1-2 teaspoons Dr. Dave's double sugar
1 egg
Mix in a coffee cup until all ingredients are moistened. Microwave 50
seconds. Will not stick to cup.
Serve with plenty of butter or ghee.
PS. Don't forget the egg - Susie tried this recipe without the egg and reports that it is disgusting that way.

How to find us -
Our address is 9725 Fair Oaks Blvd.
Finding the new location is very easy. Coming from highway 50 up Sunrise Blvd, you turn left and go up a block. We are on the right hand side - the building just past the Subway Sandwich shop. If you are coming down Sunrise from the Mall area then just turn right on Fair Oaks Blvd and up a block on the right.
If you are coming from the Roseville area you could come down Sunrise Blvd, but that is a long trek. It is probably shorter time wise to come down Auburn Blvd - San Juan Ave like you have been for the Sunset
office, but instead of turning left at Sunset, keep going straight 3
more lights to Fair Oaks Blvd and turn left. Go down 2 lights to New York Ave, go through the intersection, and immediately turn into the turn lane once the center divider ends. We are on the left.

Sugar tied to dementia
-
In a study of over 2000 seniors in the Seattle area a very clear and direct finding was made showing that the higher their blood sugar levels were, the greater their chance of getting dementia. This study shows that not just diabetics need to worry about dementia, but everyone who consumes too much sugar is at increased risk. Sugar dementia

Half of Americans sip sugary drinks daily
We are a soda pop nation. The average teen male is consuming three times the amount of fructose sugar in those drinks than his liver can process. The excess is treated by the liver just like alcohol, causing the same liver damage alcohol does. The numbers do not even count fruit juice, sweetened teas or sweetened milk products. Soda pop is a poison to the body - both the sugar and the artificial sweeteners. I love root beer myself, but to not kill myself with the stuff, I make my own and sweeten it with my stevia based super sweet drops.

What color is your night light?
Light at night can affect our mood and our health. We are designed to wake up with the sun and go to bed with the sun. That means no light at night, or at most the low embers of a campfire or fireplace emitting a low red glow. Research shows that seeing light at night in the white to blue end of the spectrum disrupts our hormonal balance and throws our circadian sleep cycle out of whack. When that happens it blocks the release of growth hormone in the middle of the night that the body uses to heal the stresses of the day.

Dr. DeLapp has been a philosopher, non-force Chiropractor, medical intuitive, and health innovator for over 30 years. He began experimenting with medical intuition in 1972 while studying physics at UC Davis. In addition to physics he designed and completed an individual major in the philosophy and psychology of education. Shortly after he choose to pursue a career in the only truly health oriented profession available at that time, Chiropractic. He graduated with honors in 1981 with his doctorate and opened a private practice.
Since that time he has continued his research into the effects of consciousness and learning on health.
He developed the Biomagnetic Retraining system for correcting movement abnormalities.
Since 1991 he has focused on developing a powerful system for uncovering and assisting the mind-body connection in health and personal growth. The in-depth coaching, guided by the subconscious direction from the body, is called Heartflow and the simpler mind-body retraining for health and unfoldment he has named Gracework. Both are available at Fair Oaks Health.
