Arthritis Help

 Hi ,

As you might imagine, I see a lot of painful joints every day.  Sometimes it is simple muscle strain or spasm causing a pinching of the joint tissues that is the cause of the pain.  Other times there has been a fall or accident producing direct impact damage to the joints.  But the most common thing I hear from people when I ask them what caused their joint pain is "I don't know - nothing happened - I didn't do a thing to cause this."

So what is that about?  Why would a joint suddenly get inflamed for no reason?  As most of you have heard me say, "There is always a reason; we just might not be able to find out what it is."

Well recently I have been researching a really common cause for joint pain as a spin off of my research into leaky gut causes.  What would leaky gut and joint pain have in common?  Both can be caused by nightshades.  Eating nightshades can tear holes in your gut lining and it can stiffen your joints and induce the calcium deposits we find in osteoarthritic joints.

What are nightshades?  Nightshades are a family of vegetables we eat all the time in this culture.  We are talking about tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, eggplant, okra, and tobacco.  By peppers I mean chili peppers, green peppers, sweet peppers, paprika, and cayenne, but not peppercorns.  Potatoes do not include sweet potatoes or yams.

So how common is sensitivity to nightshade vegetables?  If you have joint pain, depending on the study, 74% to 90% of those with joint pain have sensitivity to nightshade vegetables affecting their pain levels.  So if you have joint pain for no good reason, then you probably have issues with the nightshade family of vegetables.  Similarly if you have one of those famous weather barometer joints that can predict an oncoming storm, you probably have nightshade sensitivity.  The same is true for folks who have cracking joints, muscle pain and tightness, morning stiffness, poor healing, insomnia, heartburn, GERD, and gall bladder problems.  Reacting to nightshades can cause all of these.

Nightshades contain several toxic substances that are there to act as pesticides to keep insects and animals (including us) from eating them.  The most significant is Solanine - a poison that blocks the breakdown of the nerve transmitter acetylcholine that tells our muscles to contract.  Without proper breakdown, our muscles stay too tight for too long.  You see this in folks that are stiff in the morning or after resting for a while.  They have to keep moving to keep their muscles loose.

This same activity is what makes many of our chemical pesticides like Malathion and Diazinon work.  As you can easily imagine, joints will get very pinched for "no reason" if we have these kinds of chemicals running through our body, even if it is from a natural source like potatoes and tomatoes. Solanine poisoning is primarily displayed by gastrointestinal and neurological disorders. Symptoms include nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, stomach cramps, burning of the throat, cardiac dysrhythmia, headache and dizziness. Hallucinations, loss of sensation, paralysis, fever, jaundice, dilated pupils and hypothermia have been reported in more severe cases.

Nightshades also contain calcitriol, a powerful hormone that forces our gut to absorb too much calcium and push it into soft tissues like muscles and joints.  Some researchers feel that osteoarthritis may actually be caused by nightshades forcing calcium into joints and replacing our healthy cartilage.

Have you ever noticed how addicting french fries and ketchup are.  Nightshade plants contain nicotine which is very addictive.  French fries and ketchup are potatoes and tomatoes (plus the additional bonus of addictive sugar.)

What can you do about nightshade poisoning?  There is only one answer - stop eating nightshades.  This is a serious challenge in this culture, almost as bad as avoiding gluten.  Potatoes, tomatoes, and chilies are in everything.  Potato starch is used as a thickening agent in all kinds of commercial foods and tomato, paprika, or chili powder is used in most "seasonings and natural flavors".

An interesting side note, petunias are in the nightshade family, so obviously you don't want to eat petunias.  One of the most common foods used by the food industry today is soy, and almost all the soy in this country is GMO soy.  What makes the soy GMO (genetically modified) was the addition of petunia genes into the soy. Now soy has to be considered a part of the nightshade family.  Gogi berries are also in this family.

It takes 6 to 12 weeks to clear your system of the effects of nightshades.  If you are not sure if you have nightshade sensitivity, then completely avoid them for 6 to 12 weeks and see how you feel.  Is there a change in your stiffness and pain?  If you are still not sure after 6 to 12 weeks, then do a challenge day where you eat as many and as much nightshade food as you can.  Watch to see how this makes you feel over the next 2 days.

Not everyone is sensitive to the nightshade vegetables, but if you are one of those who are, then avoiding them completely for the rest of your life will make a world of difference to you and your pain levels.  So take the challenge and see how you feel.

Yours in Health,

David

How to find us -

Our address is  9725 Fair Oaks Blvd.
Finding the new location is very easy.  Coming from highway 50 up Sunrise Blvd, you turn left and go up a block.  We are on the right hand side - the building just past the Subway Sandwich shop.  If you are coming down Sunrise from the Mall area then just turn right on Fair Oaks Blvd and up a block on the right.

If you are coming from the Roseville area you could come down Sunrise Blvd, but that is a long trek.  It is probably shorter time wise to come down Auburn Blvd - San Juan Ave like you have been for the Sunset office, but instead of turning left at Sunset, keep going straight 3 more lights to Fair Oaks Blvd and turn left.  Go down 2 lights to New York Ave, go through the intersection, and immediately turn into the turn lane once the center divider ends.  We are on the left.

Sunshine vitamin 'may treat asthma'

Asthma sufferers with low levels of vitamin D have much worse symptoms than those with good levels of vitamin D.  Vitamin D is formed in your skin when you are exposed to strong sunlight.  Early morning sun or winter sun will not do the trick.  This seems to do with keeping certain immune chemicals from getting too high, and vitamin D is a hormone that helps control the immune system.

Freezing nerves knocks pain out cold

In a new procedure doctors are freezing pain nerves to decrease pain.  Freezing the outer layer of the nerve greatly reduces the ability of the nerve to fire, thereby decreasing the nerve pain signals.  The treatment can relieve pain significantly for several months up to a year without the need for dangerous steroids that are typically used now to inject nerves.  The procedure is done with a needle guided by x-ray imaging to the nerve root where a pressurized  gas chills the needle probe to minus 16 degrees Celsius creating a freezer burn in the outer layer of the nerve.

Controlling prosthesis with the mind

The government is developing some really cool new technology to allow doctors to hook up a patients nerves in the arm or leg to control a prosthetic hand or foot.  This is much less dangerous than current technology that tries to implant sensors directly into the brain to control prosthetics with.

"It is easier to perceive error than to find truth, for the former lies on the surface and is easily seen, while the latter lies in the depth, where few are willing to search for it."
