Detox Time !
Hi ,
It is late winter and it is the time our bodies are designed to do a thorough internal house cleaning. Throughout most of human history, this is the time of year food became extremely scarce. In the northern climates a typical human would likely not eat much at all. There might be a few scraps of dried fish or jerky left over from your preparations for winter, but most other food would have been long consumed. To fight your hunger you resort to tearing tree bark off and eating the softer inner layers - not much nutrition, but lots of filling fiber.
The days have started to get longer and warmer (at least in California) and the new green shoots are starting to come up. Although most of these green shoots are bitter at this point, many of them are edible. If you are lucky enough to trap an animal to eat you are delighted, but otherwise your diet is mostly bitter greens and tree bark. Your calorie intake is minimal and you are surviving off any stored body fat you have. (Your ability to rapidly put on weight in the autumn by eating autumn fruits and starchy grains, vegetables, and tubers is critical to your survival this time of year.)
Mother Nature carefully designed the human body to take advantage of this time of year. The lack of food and the forced consumption of bitter greens and lots of fiber triggers the liver to go into a total detoxification mode. Just being alive produces lots of toxic waste products in our bodies. Hormones and many other chemicals our body produces become toxic once our body has finished using them. These toxins irritate the body until the liver has the chance to break them down and eliminate them through the bowel by binding them to fiber.
Unfortunately the liver can only do so much at one time. When it is busy processing our food, it can't get around to destroying the toxins. It waits to do this when it does not have food to deal with. The body cleverly stores these toxins in fat cells to get them out of the general circulation where they might do a lot of damage. When there is no food around the fat cells begin to shrink as the fat is being used for food and the poisons get squeezed back out into the circulation for the liver to deal with. Fortunately this corresponds perfectly with when the liver is ready to deal with them, as there is no food coming in to keep the liver busy at this time.

So starvation and detoxification go hand in hand. That is why one of the oldest healing techniques is fasting. Animals naturally fast when they are sick to pump up their liver's poison fighting ability. Unfortunately most fasting techniques do not follow Nature's plan. Fasting on just water or lemon juice and maple syrup misses the importance of the bitter greens and the fiber that needs to be there for proper detoxification to take place.
Restricting calories to below 500 calories a day will trigger the liver to go into detox mode. How successful the liver is at this process depends on it having enough tiny chemical pieces called lipotrophic factors on hand to use to bind to the poisons. The liver first breaks the poisons apart into pieces then binds these lipotrophic factors to the pieces to make them water soluble so they can flush out of the liver and then out the colon.

So why are bitter greens important? There are phytochemicals in many bitter greens that cause the liver channels and ducts to open up and dump out their contents. Bitters literally flush out the liver.
So what is with the fiber? Once the poisons are dumped into the small intestine they are supposed to bind to the fibers to be carried out through the intestine to the colon and then out of the body. Unfortunately, if there are no fibers for the poison to bind to, the poisons can be "digested" in the small intestine just like food and reabsorbed back into the general circulation. All that work by the liver is now lost and you end up "poisoning" yourself all over again. This is why people can feel so bad on a fast. They try to put a positive spin on this by calling it a "healing crisis", but it is really just self-poisoning. Proper fasting done the way Nature intended does not have this unpleasant occurrence.
February / March are the natural times your body is designed to go through this detoxification process. You are designed to drop the fat weight you gained in the autumn and flush out the poisons accumulated from the previous year. This way you can start the New Year lean and strong and ready for action.

We started to defeat this natural healing process when we developed agriculture and started growing grains in enough quantity to keep us in plenty of food throughout the winter. In the last 100 years this has been amplified to having all sorts of foods available all year round. We never need to face not having enough food. We don't get the opportunity to burn off our winter survival fat and we don't get the opportunity to flush the poisons out of our body. Is there any wonder that our society is getting fatter and sicker with each passing year?
This natural cleaning process has become a hundred times more important in this day and age than it was for our ancestors. They only had to deal with the natural poisons that developed in the process of living. We have tens of thousands of new poisons to deal with. Our air, water, and food are filled with toxic compounds that never even existed on the planet a hundred years ago. Our body stores it away in fat cells, in bone, in wherever it can find. The liver keeps up as much as it can, but it is almost always busy processing the constant feeding we do to ourselves.

Our livers need more than just one time a year to clean house and rid us of poisons. We need year round cleaning these days. One modern thought that has been making the rounds to support the liver's ability to detox is to limit our eating to only 4 or 5 hours a day. For example, skipping breakfast and just having a lunch and a supper 4 or 5 hours later with no snacks or other consumption at any other time. This way the liver is able to finish processing our food by midnight and then has 12 hours to go into detox mode to do a bit of house cleaning every day. This is a good strategy and many people are using it successfully. It's only drawback is that the lack of long term starvation (less than 500 calories a day) never stimulates the use of fat from fat cells that draws the stored poisons out to be eliminated.
So what do we do to get cleaned up and ready for spring?
For the average person I created a protocol I named the Green Fast which is on my website. It has 2 levels. I recommend a good three weeks on the Green Fast to clean the body out. This protocol can be used every couple months if you have a lot of internal toxins to release. I strongly recommend using Hepato Synergy - a combination of the 4 most important supplements to support the liver cleaning process.

For a gentler surface cleaning without the diet restrictions just using Hepato Synergy two or three times a year can be a big help in fighting liver congestion from too many toxins.
For hard core internal clean freaks like me you can do what I am doing now. Two weeks ago I started with 4 days of just a fiber/protein shake (no carb) to get my body into the fasting state (ketosis). Then I did 5 days of just water to clear the system of any food reactions, then added daily fiber to the water to carry the poisons away. I add the Hepato Synergy in with the fiber intake to support the liver in this process. I will continue like this until my body tells me it is ready to start eating again. Usually when I fast I am not hungry after the first three days for some period of time (usually 1 to 3 weeks) then suddenly I feel really hungry. That is my body signaling that it is ready for food again. Depending upon my satisfaction with my results at that point, I will likely switch to the Green Fast for a period of time.
I had been eating carbs on and off since Thanksgiving and it really produced a lot of inflammation in my body. One sign of that inflammation is a lot of water weight gain. This comes off rapidly when you do water fasting as you have removed any food you are allergic to as well as all the carbs. I have already dropped the 20 pounds of water I put on since Thanksgiving. Fat burning is limited to a couple pounds a week, so I know the weight loss is all about inflammatory water weight gain.

Any way you want to do it, now is the ideal time to give your system a general house cleaning. Whether you want to do a surface clean by just using Hepato Synergy, a deep clean with the Green Fast, or a super clean with water fasting and the whole bit, I urge you to just engage the natural cycle we were designed to build our health with. It is time for spring-cleaning. Get on board.
Take care,
David
Changing of the guard at FOHAC
We are saying farewell to our valued support staff Gypsy as she moves forward in her life to engage creating a new self employed career as a combination Hypnotherapist and massage therapist. Best of luck!
Here we see Gypsy handing off the front door key to our new support person Sherry, who will be taking over for Gypsy starting Monday.
The Loving Life Elixer is a big hit, but the folks that like their coffee black asked for an unsweetened straight cacao powder version without the Moringa powder included. I have brought bags of Organic Cacao Powder to the office at the terrific price of only $9.75 for 12 ounces.
How to find us -
Our address is 9725 Fair Oaks Blvd.
If you are coming from the Roseville area you could come down Sunrise Blvd, but that is a long trek. It is probably shorter time wise to come down Auburn Blvd - San Juan Ave like you have been for the Sunset
office, but instead of turning left at Sunset, keep going straight 3
more lights to Fair Oaks Blvd and turn left. Go down 2 lights to New York Ave, go through the intersection, and immediately turn into the turn lane once the center divider ends. We are on the left.
Take care,
David
