 Autoimmune Disease

 Hi ,

Well I finally took the plunge.  Six months ago the first commercially available means for us average patients to find out if our own bodies immune cells are attacking us across many different tissue types became available.  Individual expensive lab tests have been available for testing such things as Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Rheumatoid Arthritis, Lupus, Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, or a few other nasty autoimmune diseases, but a general test that scans a wide variety of tissue types has never been available until now.  Cyrex Labs made available their Array 5 that tests for 25 different tissue types in one fell swoop.  Individually these tests would add up to many thousands of dollars and still not be as comprehensive as the Array 5.

Because I had gene testing done three years ago that showed I had gluten sensitivity and leaky gut I knew I was a prime candidate for autoimmune problems.  That is why I immediately swore off all grains and dairy, as they are prime drivers of autoimmune disease.  But a few weeks ago I decided to finally see just how bad things were in my system.  (Plus I was motivated by the fact that Cyrex was still offering a half price of $595 for the array 5.)

It took 3 weeks for the results to come in.  When it did arrive, the picture was not pretty.  Of the 25 tissue types tested, 14 of mine were being attacked by my immune system - 2 of them severely.  My thyroid and my collagen connective tissues are being eaten alive, which explains why weight loss is such a challenge and why my shoulder and elbow injuries have refused to heal.)

I can just imagine how bad the results of this test would have turned out if it had been available 3 years ago when I was still eating grains and dairy (and when I was 90 pounds heavier.)

From the perspective of medical researchers, autoimmune disease is the disease of the 21st century.  Research into this area has been intense over the last 20 years and they are just beginning to understand the mechanisms behind it.  As yet, there are NO medical treatments for curing autoimmune disease.  All they have are massively powerful drugs for suppressing the whole immune system, like steroids, to suppress symptoms.  There is NOTHING for actually helping the underlying problem.  There are lots of promising leads, but nothing concrete yet.

Fortunately, a massive amount of research has and is being done to identify natural substances that do slow down or turn off this autoimmune process in different ways.  This is how pharmaceutical research is done.  The drug companies scour the world looking for natural substances that solve the problems they are researching, and then they try to figure out how to make a synthetic version of the natural substance that can be patented and turned into a big money-making prescription drug.  Almost every drug we have started at one time as an herbal or plant extract that the drug companies figured out a way to create a synthetic version of.  Plant extracts are expensive and have very little profit margin - maybe 200%.  Synthetics, on the other hand, typically will have profit margins in the range of 10,000% and up.  So big money is involved.

Most consumers never hear about this research, but luckily for us a few brilliant field doctors are bringing the results down to us everyday folks and producing remedies that work many years before the drug companies are able to create the drugs to help with autoimmune diseases.

The two most powerful herbal extracts that positively help quench the autoimmune fire in the body are turmeric and resveratrol.  Although very helpful, these products are not well absorbed by the body (turmeric capsules are only 1% absorbed).  Special lyposomal carrier preparations have been created that can boost absorption as much as 10 fold; as in our Turmero Active and Resvero Active.

There are literally thousands of studies that have been done on turmeric, and almost as many on resveratrol.  Both are potent agents for reducing and turning off the inflammatory process both between cells and for stopping the actual gene expression in the nucleus of each cell for the creation of inflammatory and destructive cytokines (toxin creating proteins).  The most powerful effect they have on cells is the breaking of the self-amplifying destructive loop formed by something called nuclear transcription factor kappa Beta.  This is a substance that actually controls your genes and tells them to manufacture toxic inflammatory proteins that destroy your healthy cells.  Once it gets started it keeps speeding up until your cells are destroyed.  Turmeric and resveratrol can block this process.

What causes this NFkappaB to get started in the first place?
Insulin surges from poor sugar control
Environmental toxins, heavy metals, chemicals found in         modern foods
Gut inflammation from a bad diet
Liver toxins from incompletely broken down poisons due       to liver overload
Inflamed immune cells from other sources of body                 inflammation
    Food allergies and sensitivities
Trans fats, excess omega 6 oils, and rancid oils from             over-heating/frying
    Bacterial and viral antigens
Cytokines from NFkappaB activation (a self supporting        loop)

In simple explanation, just about everything in our modern lifestyle and diet triggers this huge inflammatory response on a very deep cellular level - right down to the expression of our very genes.

This inflammatory response is in turn then responsible for most all our modern degenerative diseases:

    Cancer
    Heart Disease
    Arthritis
    Dementia, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's
    Diabetes
    Stroke
    Autoimmune diseases
    Degenerative eye disease
    Inflammatory bowel disease
    Kidney and liver disease
    Hormone disorders
    Osteoporosis
    And so on...

In fact most everything except infections, accidents, and death by malnutrition start as some inflammatory disorder on a cellular level.  The essence of healthcare in the coming century will be all about stopping these inflammatory pathways.  Stopping NFkappaB expression is one fundamental way to bring this under control.

In previous newsletters I have already discussed the huge importance of adequate levels of vitamin D3 for moderating autoimmune disease.  In fact I will now be increasing my daily intake to 10,000 units per day, since I now have proof of an active autoimmune disease process going on in my body.  I have recently learned that zinc is also crucial in this process.

Another key player is the expression of free radicals in the body; which is why there is so much press about the value of anti-oxidants.  Anti-oxidants neutralize free radicals.  While we read about the terror of super free radicals like mercury and pesticides being a problem, we rarely hear about the most abundant source of free radicals - sugar.  The reason your body will always burn any sugar you eat before it will burn any of its favorite food, fats, is because sugar is dangerous to the body.  Sugar is the "quick energy" because the body rushes to break it down before it does any other damage to the body.  Sugar binds to proteins in your body called glycation, and literally candies them.  It destroys your tiny blood vessels and damages the energy powerhouses in every cell called mitochondria.  It is the gradual destruction of your mitochondria that causes you to be less and less energetic each year as you get older.  Your energy factories are gradually being destroyed by the free radicals formed by the breakdown of sugar for energy.

The body's main anti-oxidant is glutathione.  All the many anti-oxidants found in such foods as blueberries and pomegranates and dark chocolate are all used to help the body rebuild its supply of glutathione.  Glutathione is made from a sulfur containing amino acid called cysteine, and nutrients that supply the activated forms of this amino acid are the best ways for rebuilding your levels of this vital body anti-oxidant.  We carry a product called Glutathione Recycler that is optimized to do just this.

The last key player I want to mention today is nitric oxide synthase (NOS).  This chemical is probably the most dangerous inflammation cause for our blood vessels when it is in the form called inducible nitric oxide (iNOS), yet is highly beneficial when it is in its two other forms called eNOS and nNOS.  INOS  promotes tissue destruction, inflammation, and autoimmune attack while the other two forms protect nerve tissue, helps tissues recover and regenerate, opens up blood flow, and dissolves plaques in the blood vessels.  Until recently all the methods of raising the levels of the good NOS also raised the bad one as well.  A new compound formula released last year has been found to solve this problem by actually inhibiting the bad NOS while boosting up the good guys.  This compound is called Nitric Balance.

Well, that is the state of the art in combating autoimmune disease.

1. Clean up the diet and remove all grains, dairy, and food allergens
2. Eliminate sources of environmental toxins.
3. Heal the leaky gut.
4. Detoxify the liver.
5. Get rid of excess body fat - especially inflammatory belly fat.
6. De-stress, rest well, and get good quality exercise (interval training for example)
7. Get enough vitamin D3 (blood levels around 90ng/ml) and zinc
8. Take bio-available turmeric, resveratrol, glutathione support, and Nitric Balance.

As I learn more I will be sure to pass the information along to you, since many if not most of you will have to use this information at some point in your lives.  We are all living in the modern world and it is breaking down our bodies.  Autoimmune disease is the way this is showing up.

Take care,

David

Hours Changing at FOHAC for Dr. DeLapp

We are returning to Wednesdays as our short day beginning April.  Our new hours will be 9 to 1 Monday through Friday and 3 to 6 Mon, Tues, Thurs, and Friday.

How to find us -

Our address is  9725 Fair Oaks Blvd.

If you are coming from the Roseville area you could come down Sunrise Blvd, but that is a long trek.  It is probably shorter time wise to come down Auburn Blvd - San Juan Ave like you have been for the Sunset office, but instead of turning left at Sunset, keep going straight 3 more lights to Fair Oaks Blvd and turn left.  Go down 2 lights to New York Ave, go through the intersection, and immediately turn into the turn lane once the center divider ends.  We are on the left.

Take care,

David

Salt linked to immune rebellion

A new discovery in how our body forms certain types of immune cells points to the amount of salt in our diet may directly increase the development of autoimmune disease.  It is already known that such things as a lack of vitamin D, smoking, and viral infection increase the chances of developing various autoimmune diseases, but this is the first time that salt levels were found to trigger your body to attack itself.  Much more research needs to be done on this.

Vitamin D levels influence genes for immune health

Norwegian researchers report findings that vitamin D effects the expression of genes that have to do with immunity and inflammation.  Not enough vitamin D leads to hypersensitivity or auto immunity by allowing certain genes to turn on that cause this.  This provides understanding about why vitamin D deficiency causes or makes worse diseases such as osteoporosis, common cancers, heart disease, autoimmune disease, and infections.

Yellow Pages Opt Out

I don't know about you, but my kitchen seems to always have a pile of telephone books about 3 feet high.  I can't remember the last time I used a telephone book - the internet is easier and faster.  But that does not stop the phone company as well as its 2 or 3 advertizing competitors from dumping these massive phone books on my driveway every year.  What a waste.  Well it seems we can opt out.
