  Post Thanksgiving

 Hi ,

I don't know about you but I engaged in the traditional Thanksgiving ritual of eating more than I could possibly digest for at least a week.  Every year the Hors d'oeuvres do me in.  I know it is some sort of conspiracy.  We are busy running around early in the morning getting stuff ready to go so we don't have time for a proper breakfast.  We arrive at the designated house of the appointed hosting family member for the year around noon absolutely starving.  Hors d'oeuvres are all laid out to snack on while the Thanksgiving dinner is made ready.

Somehow this process always takes 2 to 3 hours, so we nibble on snacks while we are waiting.  Missing breakfast then having to wait two or three hours for the Thanksgiving feast to finally manifest leads to way too many hors d'oeuvres going down the hatch.  By the time dinner arrives I am full on snacks, but you are still required and honor bound to try everybody's contribution to the meal (we do pot luck every year with all the extended family.)  With each new generation that means new dishes prepared and new ever growing piles of food to dump on an already over full stomach filled with pre-meal snacks.

I don't seem to learn this one so I still have work to do on my cognition and memory.  Or maybe it is some other part of my brain - my gut brain that thinks I can eat three days worth of food in one afternoon.  Oh well, I read an article last week that said the days between Thanksgiving and Christmas were the very best time for doing a cleansing fast.  The challenge is getting myself past the carb craving that breaking my normal carb free lifestyle for a holiday like Thanksgiving creates.  Do I get right back on track, or does it take a few weeks of carb indulgence before I get enough consequences to convince me to leave the carbs alone?  We shall see...

During the holiday conversation my son was telling me about the craziness that happens the day after Thanksgiving - Black Friday.  I had never participated in this mad dash to save a few dollars and kick off the holiday buying frenzy before.  Not wanting to miss out on such a cherished slice of Americana, Ellen and I actually ventured out on Black Friday to see what all the excitement was about.  Maybe we were too slow about getting out there as we did not hit the road until after 11 in the morning as my son Mason and his girlfriend Miki were staying with us, but other than the parking lots at the mall being totally full, there was no excitement.  I was led to believe there would be fighting in the aisles over toaster ovens and the like.  No, it was all very orderly.  Even stranger, the new pair of black jeans I bought was not discounted at all.  Where were all the good deals?  Did we miss all the good stuff?

So we wandered around for a while then tried to find an open restaurant for a late lunch/early dinner, but most of the ones we frequent were closed.  Finally we ended up at the Siam Patio across the street from the new office for dinner then off to the house to decorate our year round pretend Christmas tree with season appropriate ornaments.  Ellen loves the lights so the tree stays up all year and we just change the decorations on it to fit the season.  There, all done and we are officially launched into the Christmas season.

The best of the season to all of you,
David

We will be closed Christmas eve and Christmas day.

We have moved
.
Our new address is at 9725 Fair Oaks Blvd.

If you are coming from the Roseville area you could come down Sunrise Blvd, but that is a long trek.  It is probably shorter timewise to come down Auburn Blvd - San Juan Ave like you have been for the Sunset office, but instead of turning left at Sunset, keep going straight 3 more lights to Fair Oaks Blvd and turn left.  Go down 2 lights to New York Ave, go through the intersection, and immediately turn into the turn lane once the center divider ends.  We are on the left.

We are looking forward to seeing all of you at our new location.

And Thanks again to all the wonderful folks that came and helped us move!

Take care,

David

New Exercise Program
Patients are reporting great results with the new back strengthening program I wrote about in the March 18th newsletter.  I highly recommend this program for everyone as we all need stronger backs to counter the effects of too much sitting.  If you missed this information here is a link to that newsletter.

Nose cell transplant enables paralyzed dogs to walk

Ok, this one caught my attention.  How does a nose transplant solve paralysis?  Well it turns out the nerve cells in our nose never stop growing.  The researchers harvested these cells and grew them larger in the lab.  Then they injected them into the injured spinal cords of the dogs.  Many of the dogs showed good improvement.  Human trials have yet to be performed.

 'Fat' drug could treat epilepsy

100 years ago a popular and successful treatment for epilepsy was to put the patients on a ketogenic diet - what we think of as an Atkins diet today.  With this diet your body breaks your fat down into ketones which your body burns for energy rather than sugar.  Ketones burn without creating the oxidative stress damage that sugar burning creates and this seems to calm down the epilepsy.  So here we are over a hundred year later and some researcher comes up with the money making idea of making ketones in the lab and using them as a drug to treat epilepsy.  Never mind that everybody can manufacture all the ketones they could ever want just by not eating carbs.  There is no profit in that, so lets make them a drug.  Are we going to fall for this one?
