Stop Osteoporosis

 Hi ,

I just finished a seminar on osteoporosis testing and treatment and thought this would be a good topic for the newsletter.  Bone health is serious business for many of my patients, both men and women.  Addressing bone health is something you can't wait until you are 60 or 70 to address.  It needs to be addressed beginning in your 40's and early 50's.

Bones are made by bone building cells called osteoblasts.  Other cells called osteoclasts are also constantly tearing down bones by munching on them.  Our bones are in a constant state of being remodeled as they adapt to our changing needs.  As long as the activity of the builders and munchers is equal, our bones stay strong.  But if the builders get slowed down or the munchers get overly active, our bones get weaker and weaker.  1 in 2 women and 1 in 4 men over age 50 will break at least 1 bone due to osteoporosis.

Our hormones and our diet regulate this balance.  So naturally correcting imbalances in our hormones and quality of our diet are the major factors in preventing osteoporosis.  I will write more about this in a minute.  But first, how do we find bone problems while we can still do something to prevent the problem?

The common medical test is the DEXA scan, which is a special type of x-ray that measures the density of your bones.  This is good as a general scan, but significant degeneration of the bones has already taken place before the scan shows a positive finding.  They are not even recommended until age 65 for women, and currently there is no recommendation for men.  There is a better way that will find problems 10 to 20 years earlier.

As the bone munchers chew up the bone, the broken down parts end up in the blood stream and then passed out of the body through the urine.  These can be measured.  Even before these levels get high enough to trigger a warning, we can test hormone levels to see if there is an imbalance that will lead to osteoporosis.  Anything that lowers your levels of estrogen, progesterone, or testosterone will increase bone loss.  We use a urine test and a saliva test to check these factors out.  It is recommended that the first test be done a year or two after menopause begins. Learn more here.

Other risk factors include:
Medications like acid reflux medications, antacids, prednisone or other steroids, some contraceptives, SSRI's, lithium, and some seizure meds.
Lifestyle factors like too many sodas, too much sugar/simple carbs, too much salt, caffeine, smoking, alcohol drinking, low BMI, not enough impact or bone straining exercise, poor diet with not enough calcium, magnesium, vitamin D3, vitamin K2, and poor digestion for any reason, especially hypochlorhydria.
Diseases like celiac, lupus, IBS, diabetes, hyperthyroid, rheumatoid arthritis, Parkinson's, liver disease, hyperparathyroid, Cushing's disease, autoimmunity against your own bones, and leukemia all increase bone loss.
Unavoidable things like increasing age, family history, small bone structure, menopause, and just being female all increase the risk of osteoporosis.

So what do we do if you are found to be at high risk for osteoporosis, or are already on your way towards osteoporosis?  The answer is to fix what you find.  If your digestion is poor so you can't absorb the nutrients you need to build bone then that has to be healed.  If your diet is bad and just does not have the nutrients in it then that has to be upgraded and possibly supplementation to bring up your nutritional status is called for.

Eliminating risk factors as much as possible is a big part of the prevention and recovery from osteoporosis issues.  Drinking, smoking , and high stress lifestyles set you up for collapsing bones.  Adrenal stress is a major cause for hormone problems and has a whole set of protocols for addressing these types of problems.  We test for adrenal problems with another saliva test to check your cortisol levels at four different times of the day. Learn more here.

If your hormones are out of whack then different protocols and treatments may be indicated to bring things back into line.  If you have some sort of underlying disease state setting you up for weak bones then those need to be addressed.  If meds are causing you to develop osteoporosis, then we need to find better answers to your health issues.

In past issues I have talked about the need for bone straining exercise.  Bones only build if the body gets the message that you need more bone.  It gets that message when bones flex.  Bones are not supposed to flex much, so if they do your body figures you need stronger bones.  What makes the bones flex is lifting heavy things and activities that produce an impact on your body like running.  Doctors used to tell patients to walk regularly, but the studies have now shown that walking does nothing to strengthen bones because there is not enough impact in walking.  That means elliptical machines and stair steppers will also not help build bone.

In the office we use a machine that jiggles the body by producing impacts on the feet alternately.  This type of whole body vibration has been shown to increase bone density.  My own mother uses this method and has the DEXA scan results to show the improvement.

Keeping your bones strong involves a lot more than just taking your calcium each day.  There are many factors that have to be checked out and tested for before any meaningful prevention or bone rebuilding can effectively be done.  Fortunately we have the tests and treatments here at Fair Oaks Health.

Yours in health,

David

Coconut Flour and Coconut Oil
We have the good stuff from Tropical Traditions back in the office again for you.  This is not your cheap solvent extracted coconut oil, but coconut oil harvested in the traditional manner - the oil is mechanically squeezed out of the coconut meat without the use of any chemical solvents.  These are pure organic coconuts raised without fertilizers or pesticides.  Its a little more expensive, but so much better for you.

New Exercise Program
Patients are reporting great results with the new back strengthening program I wrote about in the March 18th newsletter.  I highly recommend this program for everyone as we all need stronger backs to counter the effects of too much sitting.  If you missed this information here is a link to that newsletter.

Berries help keep your mind young

Examining data from the Nurses study of almost 122,000 women, researchers found that women who regularly ate blueberries or strawberries at least 2 times per week had a delay in memory decline as they aged.  On average their brains retained function 2.5 years longer than their counterparts that did not eat berries.  Now that is a simple diet modification to help protect the brain.

Can probiotics make you sexier?

Studies on mice say yes!  Mice fed probiotic rich yogurt had shinier and thicker fur, copulated more effectively, had larger litters, and weaned those larger litters more effectively.  The probiotic fed mice also had more "sexual swagger" than mice fed junk food.  The MIT researchers felt that the results may be directly relevant to humans.  The research was actually looking at the role of probiotics on obesity and cancer when this surprise result was noticed.

Human threads become spar parts

Cellular science has been custom growing human tissue for surgical repair for many years.  They have been trying to roll the flat sheets of grown tissue into tubes for the repair of blood vessels without good success.  Now some clever person has figured out a way to take threads of human tissue and weave them into vessels for transplant purposes.  This new technique provides doctors with the ability to weave tissue grafts for any size and most any shape just like knitting a sweater.
