More than Calories

 Hi ,

The standard medical weight loss belief is "you have to simply burn more calories than you consume to lose weight."  While it is true that you have to burn more than you consume, the simply part is way out of line.  Most anyone who has been challenged with weight issues knows there is a whole lot more to weight loss than just calories.

My last newsletter began a discussion of one of these factors - insulin swings caused by carbohydrate consumption.  In the office, when a person tells me they want to lose weight, the very first thing I do is a muscle test to see if their blood sugar is stable through proper communication between the liver and pancreas.  If your blood sugar is wobbly, you will be constantly triggering adrenaline surges every time your sugar takes a dip.  This causes your liver and muscles to convert stored glycogen into more blood sugar to raise your sugar level back up.

Adrenaline is massively inflammatory, and inflammation is one of the factors that stops weight loss dead in its tracks.  At the same time adrenaline is released so is extra of the hormone cortisol.  This extra cortisol promotes belly fat weight gain and also slows down the metabolism controlling thyroid gland.

Wobbly blood sugar is caused by eating too many simple carbs and sugars.  Your body can only handle so much carbohydrate - just how much is a matter of your genetics.  Some people can handle almost none and others can handle a lot.  Unfortunately anyone carrying extra weight is most likely the type of person that does not handle carbs well.  We all know and envy people that can eat pastries and sugars all day long and never gain an ounce.  They have the genes and high metabolism for that.  This newsletter does not apply to them this week.

The big factors that drive weight loss as much as calories: Inflammation & Metabolism

Blood sugar swings hit both of these with the inflammatory adrenaline and the metabolism reducing effects of cortisol on the thyroid gland.

Inflammation also comes from food allergies, sensitivities, and intolerances affecting the gut lining and directly attacking the pancreas, thyroid, and brain.  Healing your gut and avoiding foods you are sensitive to is often the key to major weight loss for many individuals (without having to count a single calorie.)  We have several ways of testing sensitivities in the office.  Ask about it.

Even without considering food sensitivities, most modern food is very inflammatory.  The chemicals used in manufacturing and the methods of processing make just about anything that comes in a package pro-inflammatory and therefore weight gain causing.  Whole natural high-fiber vegetables and proteins are your best choices for weight loss.  Everything else makes weight loss more difficult... especially those "fat free" weight loss foods... what a joke.

The toxic loads from our foods, water, air, and skin chemical exposures are all stored in our fat cells to keep the poisons away from the more important tissues in our body like our heart.  When we start to lose weight these toxins are released back into our blood stream.  Our body may shut down our weight loss and trigger cravings to get us to re-store the poisons back in the fat cells.  This common weight loss frustration --the plateau - can only really be broken by increasing our liver's ability to destroy the toxins and eliminate them from the body.  We can support this with special herbs and liver nutrients.  (Ask about Hepato-Synergy in the office.)

I have devoted a couple newsletters to gut inflammation and the effects that has on weight gain.  Suffice it to say that if you want to lose weight, get rid of any gut inflammation.

Mood and brain functions are critical factors in weight gain.  No diet is going to work if you are too depressed or foggy brained to carry out your plans.  Getting the nutrients needed to have healthy brain function is vital.  Your digestion needs to be working well enough to break down your proteins (enough hydrochloric stomach acid) and fats (good liver bile production) so that you will have the basic materials to form the brain chemicals for a good mood.  Depression actually shuts down your metabolism as well as your drive.  Getting enough of the amino acid tryptophan to form the relaxation neurotransmitter serotonin in the brain is one example of the importance of making sure you are eating the right foods for weight loss, and not just less food.

Proteins increase your metabolism while carbohydrates slow it down.  All calories are different in their effect on you.  Loosing weight is more than just decreasing calories, it is eating the right calories that work to help you lose weight.  We need to rev up our metabolism while at the same time cooling down any inflammation.  That means eating the right foods and avoiding the wrong foods for you.

What that looks like is very individual, and we can help you find that right balance for you.  The most general rule is to eat lots of high fiber vegetables and 75 to 100 grams of good quality protein each day.  Beyond that is finding the ratio of different food types that work best for you.

Take care,

David

At Christmas I got the exciting news that I was about to become a Grandad for the first time.  A couple days ago I received a first picture of my granddaughter to be (due sometime in June.)  The happy mom and dad are to the right - my daughter-in-law Halbe and my son Devon.

Biodegradable joint implant grows new joints

A radically new approach to repairing damaged joints is being experimented with in Finland. Instead of replacing the joint with a metal or synthetic artificial joint, the Fins are inserting a synthetic cushion into the joint to prevent further grinding  damage and stimulate the joint to rebuild new cartilage.  The cushion gradually degrades as the body replaces the cushion with new joint tissue.  It has already been used on 200 patients for finger and toe joints and has just received approval for general use in Europe.

Pictures of yummy food makes you hungry

Yes, in another amazing display of scientific discovery researchers at the Max Plank Institute have discovered that viewing pictures of delicious food actually makes us hungry.  Can you imagine that?  They measured jumps in the release of the hormone ghrelin (which controls our hunger) in test subjects after they saw pictures of tasty food.  Their conclusion?  People who want to lose weight should not look at pictures of yummy food.

Toxic aldehydes detected in reheated oil

I have been preaching the dangers of heated seed oils and the issues of frying starchy foods in oils for 30 years.  Now researchers have discovered yet another toxic substance formed when we heat seed oils - aldehydes.  These nasty compounds are linked to different types of cancer and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.  Saturated and monosaturated oils like coconut and olive are not much of a problem, but the polyunsaturated oils from seeds like sunflower, canola, corn, and the like are seriously toxic when heated.  Once again the truth is the exact opposite of what the FDA has been telling us for the past 50 years.  Toss out those polyunsaturated oils - they are bad news.
