Pregnancy Diet
Hi ,

I came across a valuable article about the importance of a mother's diet during pregnancy. Since my daughter-in-law is pregnant right now with my first grandchild, this especially caught my attention.
In simple terms, the research is showing that the nutrition a baby gets in the womb determines much of its health the rest of its life. Specifically studied is the development of heart disease, type 2 diabetes/metabolic syndrome, stroke, hypertension, breast cancer, polycystic ovary syndrome, allergies, asthma, auto immune disease, osteoporosis, dementia, mental illness, and obesity. All of these are closely related to maternal nutrition while the baby is in the womb.
It seems from the studies that the ideal weight for a baby at birth is 9.5 pounds. The less it weighs, the more health problems it has as it ages. As the weight gets higher than 9.5 pounds health problems start to increase also. This information goes back to the 1980's when researchers discovered that the single biggest factor for predicting early onset heart disease was not whether someone smoked, drank, ate tons of fat, but rather their weight at birth. Compared to 5.5-pound babies, 9.5 pound babies had almost half the risk of heart disease and 70% less chance of insulin resistance.

Poor nutrition, in which the mother gets too many carbs, and not enough nutrient dense foods, is what creates malnutrition in the growing baby. This malnutrition triggers changes in the child's genetic expression that in turn create health problems many years down the road.
Women have been having babies for half a million years at least. 99% of that time they ate the same type of foods. It has only been at most the last 10,000 years that humans cultivated and ate grains. In terms of genetic adaptation, 10,000 years is a very tiny amount of time. It has only been the last 100 years that refined grains and foods have become popular and only the last 50-60 years that all the food chemicals have been added to our diet. Simply put, the body has no idea what to do with these additions to our food supply, and can not use them to create a healthy baby.
Healthy babies are made out of the mother eating healthy foods that are naturally found in a natural environment. We are talking about nutrient dense foods like dark leafy greens, egg yolks, bone marrow, healthy animal fats, fish, fermented foods, raw seeds and nuts, and organ meats like liver.
The article specifically mentioned five foods that were especially powerful for the health of your little babies.
Liver - probably the most super dense nutrition for pregnant women - full of fat soluble vitamins, iron, B12, protein, zinc, and folate - all vital for a growing fetus. Be sure to use liver from a healthy animal, not one filled with chemicals and hormones, and range fed if possible. Keep the consumption down to about 2 ounces a day so you don't overdo the vitamin A. In the first 2 months of pregnancy you don't want to consume more than 10,000 IU of vitamin A per day total from all sources. Too much of a good thing becomes a bad thing.
Egg yolks - super important for the development of the baby's brain. This is because of the choline that is the basic building block of the most important neurotransmitter in the nervous system. When eating the yolk it should still be liquid, as in a soft cooked egg, sunny side up, over easy, or even eat the yolks raw - but never scrambled or cooked till hard.
Cold water fatty fish - like cod, halibut, salmon, mackerel, and sardines. The high levels of DHA and EPA oils are crucial for fetal brain development.
Cod Liver Oil - for the same reasons as the fatty fish plus the huge levels of vitamin A and D for immune function and bone development. (Again watch the total vitamin A levels.)
Grass fed fermented dairy - full fat yogurt and kefir are not only important sources of A,D,E, & K as well as CLA (conjugated linoleic acid), but also because they support good intestinal bacteria which forms the basic source of intestinal bacteria for the baby once it is born.
To this list I would add plenty of dark leafy green vegetables like kale, collard, chard, and spinach greens, as well as fermented greens. These are packed with essential nutrients.
I can not underscore enough how important the proper nutrition of the mother is during pregnancy. Women who proudly say how they only gained 20 - 25 pounds during pregnancy, did so at the cost of the health of their child. Low birth-weight babies equals a lifetime of poorer health. If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant you need super nutrition from traditional foods. Medical doctors are not trained in nutrition and as these studies show, pregnancy nutrition is still a new science. What is being found so far is that pregnant women need exactly what they have needed for the last half million years. A bottle of pregnancy vitamins is not enough - not by a long shot. Depending on vitamins for health is like trying to build a house with only a box of nails. Nails are good, but they won't keep you warm in the winter. A house needs concrete, lumber, plywood, dry wall, and roofing tiles, and in building a body these structural components come from healthy traditional pre-civilization foods. Yours in health,
David

Pesticide exposure linked to brain changes
Pregnant women exposed to the common pesticide chlorpyrifos (CPF) have babies with with permanent brain changes that produce lowered intelligence. Even low to moderate exposure poses a threat to the babies. Chlorpyrifos is widely used on farms and in public spaces to get rid of pests. Although it was discontinued for household use in 2005, it is still widely used on foods, feed crops, in parks, golf courses, highways, and similar public areas.

How long to keep ketchup and other common condiments

I don't know about your refrigerator, but mine has various mustards, vinegars, and other condiments that have been there for years. How about that half used bottle of barbecue sauce from who knows how long ago? Well Consumer Reports recently had an article to advise us just how long it is sane to keep these old bottles around. According to the Food Safety and Inspection Service:
Ketchup, cocktail or chili sauce: 6 months;
Chutney: 1 to 2 months;
Horseradish: 3 to 4 months;
Mustard: 12 months;
Pickles and olives: 2 weeks;
Mayonnaise and salad dressing: Up to 2 months;
Barbecue sauce: 4 months;
Worchestershire sauce: 12 months;
Jams and jellies: 6 months.
It looks like some of my bottles are going to have to go.

Multicopter flying machine on its way
A German company has invented a totally cool new kind of flying machine. It has 16 motors and it is electric! It is much easier to fly than a helicopter and much more stable. Check out the video of its first test flight at the link.
It is still not quite as cool as the Martin Jetpack. Check out their commercial application video.
