gain health

Everyone agrees that excess weight is bad for your health.  Every full fat cell is a little inflammatory chemical factory destroying your health.  My personal concern was for my brain health.  I want to remember where I live when I go home from work at age 70.  But every major cause of poor health is made worse by excess fat - heart disease, diabetes, cancer, arthritis, dementia, the list goes on and on.

But what is the best way to lose the fat?  Unfortunately most of the methods promoted by best selling books and magazines either don't work or are not healthy for your body.  Most of those that are healthy have been shown to average around 18 to 25 pounds of weight loss over a year - in spite of the outrageous claims made by promoters.

If you are only 18 pounds overweight I will readily point you in the direction of one of these healthy diet programs.  But recent studies are telling us that 60% of Americans are obese, and among middle to older women that number may be as high as 80%.  That means most Americans need to lose a lot more than 18 pounds.

So what are we to do?  Curiously the most biologically appropriate way for us to lose weight is almost never talked about - fasting.  Throughout most of human history we as a species regularly experienced times of food shortage where we fasted because we had no choice.  Our bodies evolved assuming that we would be fasting periodically and developed effective survival mechanisms for just that occurrence.  In fact, our bodies use fasting time periods specifically for healing and cleansing.  The fact that we don't fast anymore is one of the reasons we are so sick.  We don't take the time to let the body cleanse and heal regularly.

An example of this is found when scientists examine the bones in the graves of hunter-gatherer tribes that experienced seasonal food shortages compared to early civilization graves.  Hunter-gatherers show stronger bones, healthier teeth, less arthritis, less cancer, no osteoporosis, no heart disease, and so on.  The bones from early civilization graves (and those of modern man) where the people had learned to store grains to eat over the winter show all those diseases in abundance.

Calorie restriction is currently believed to be the single biggest booster of longevity.  In one study I wrote about a few months ago, seniors in a care facility were put on an alternate day fasting program.  All of them experienced dramatic improvements in their health.  They were able to eliminate 80% of the medications they were taking.  For those of you that have heard that Growth Hormone is the new fountain of youth, you would be interested to know that a 24 hour fast increases your body's production of growth hormone by 1300% in women and almost 2000% in men.

Fasting increases the hormones for burning fat turning you into a fat burning machine.  Simply reducing calories does not do this - particularly if you are eating any carbohydrates, which cause the exact opposite to occur - the hormones tell you to make more fat.

One of the myths about fasting that I myself bought into 40 years ago when I first started fasting, was that fasting would cause you to eat up your own muscles.  Actually the opposite is true compared to other weight loss methods.  Fasting is actually more effective at retaining body lean mass than other methods of weight loss.

The health benefits of fasting are huge.  Cancer, heart disease, diabetes, brain health, joint health, virtually every part of the body benefits from fasting.  My brother and his wife (both health care providers) spend a couple weeks each year at a fasting clinic in Santa Rosa called True North (http://www.healthpromoting.com/) to keep themselves healthy.  The health recovery stories from that place are amazing.  But to get the benefits of fasting you do not need to take on two weeks in a clinic, you can start today at home.

For the average person trying to lose weight and make some significant health improvements I recommend one of two basic methods of fasting.  Alternate day fasting (on just water or on less than 500 calories), or 3 to 4 week periods of consuming less than 500 calories a day of non-carbohydrate foods - both good methods. 

For people that are not needing to lose significant amounts of weight but simply want to improve their health I recommend what I did for 20 years, which was to consume only water or water with a little lemon or lime juice from Thursday night until Saturday morning every week.  This 36-hour fast will provide your body with an excellent opportunity to clean out and get some much needed repairs done.

Specialty fasts like juice fasts are actually more difficult than simply fasting on water because the sugars in the juice make you really hungry and are likely to keep your body out of the true health promoting fasting state.  To trigger the state we are looking for we have to avoid carbohydrates.  They will tie up the liver and keep it from detoxifying the body.

I created a program last year that included the use of an energetic form of HCG and taste bud flavor stimulators to make the fasting easier.  I call it The Modern HCG Diet.  The HCG is not actually necessary for the weight loss, it simply makes the process easier.  Many of my patients have lost a lot of weight with this program.  If you are interested, ask my front desk for a copy of the program.  This is a 4-week below 500-calorie daily protocol using specific foods that will put you into the fasting state to improve your health while loosing weight at the same time.  What do you live on for 4 weeks?  Think of soups, salads, smoothies, and stir-fries.  This program leaves you with plenty of energy and strength to live a normal life. 

The alternate day fasting on water or on the same foods as I write about in my Modern HCG Diet is also very effective and gives you the opportunity to eat normally every other day.  The weight loss is about half as fast as the every day protocol.

I don't know of any other diet system that will give you the health benefits of fasting as easily and simply without requiring you to be under a doctor's supervision (needed for fasts of any greater length).  The benefits of both loosing weight and supercharging your health are available to you today.  It is just a matter of deciding to go for it.

Chili Peppers for Weight Loss


New research has shown that there is something in chili peppers that helps shrink fat tissue and lower fats in the blood.  Rats fed a high fat diet that included capsaicin - the hot spicy chemical in chili peppers - lost an average of 8% of their body weight compared to identical rats fed an identical diet without the capsaicin.  That would mean an 11 to 16 pound weight loss in an average human just from including chili peppers regularly in the diet.

Acoustic wind pavilion makes music out of thin air


A giant acoustic wind harp named Aeolus created by artist Luke Jerram creates its own music as wind currants blow across its massive pipes.  Although I found this wind sculpture beautiful, even more fascinating is where the artist got the idea for the sculpture.  He got the idea from desert well diggers in Iran.  They dig down through the dirt and rock until they hit water, then they tunnel sideways toward the village or fields where they want the water to go.  Every so often they dig a shaft up to the surface to let in air.  It was the strange musical whistling these shafts made when the wind blew over them that gave the artist his inspiration for the wind harp.
