This newsletter is about the emotional causes of back pain.
April 1, 2012
Hi ,

Something most doctors don't know is how much emotion can cause back problems. The word is getting around even among traditional doctors that stress will aggravate any type of pain, but few doctors are aware that it is often the root cause behind the pain.
How does this happen? The strength of each and every muscle in your body is partially controlled by the functioning of specific acupuncture energy pathways. Too much or too little energy in the right acupuncture pathway will cause the corresponding muscle to get stronger or weaker.
Centuries ago Chinese doctors charted the relationships between these acupuncture pathways and various internal organs. Many relationships to tender areas in specific muscles were also noted. At the same time they also noted that imbalances in specific pathways were associated with characteristic emotional imbalances.

Over my years of study and research I have come to understand that these acupuncture pathways (meridians) are the communication lines from the emotional part of the brain to the muscles in the same way that nerves are the communication pathway from the conscious volitional part of the higher brain to the same muscles. Nerves tell the muscles to contract to produce movement while the meridians tell the muscles to be tighter or looser to produce postural changes for communicating how we feel to others.
Most back pain comes from imbalances in the muscles. The most common is too much laxity in the spinal muscles and too much tension in the muscles in the front of the body. A couple weeks ago I mentioned using the exercises in the book "Foundation Training" to rebuild the strength in the spinal muscles as most of us simply have weak back muscles from too much sitting. Get a copy here.
Muscle balance is commonly the cause of joint pain in any movable joint in the body. Here is the key: emotional imbalance creates muscle imbalance, which in turn creates pain and dysfunction. When the muscles are out of balance, the joints move improperly, causing joint pinching, damage, and inflammation.
When I say emotional imbalance, what do I mean? In a word - FEAR, which to me means Failure to Engage and Accept Relationship. The human experience of life is all about our relationship to everything. If we fail to accept life as it is and create an engaging positive relationship with it, we will end up afraid and separate from life. This creates tension and muscle imbalance in our body, and results in pain.
The number of ways we can fail to accept and engage life is endless. Depending on the skills we have developed, our ability to connect varies tremendously. Each acupuncture meridian pathway can be thought of as the expression of specific virtues and emotional character skills. The pathways that are strong because we have the positive character traits and life skills associated with that path will send good strong messages to the specific muscles that path goes to. Those muscles will work balanced and well.

Where we don't have the emotional life skills necessary to stay positive and balanced, the corresponding meridians will send garbled messages to its muscles and they will express unbalanced actions producing tension and pain.
Classic examples I find daily in my practice are such things as neck/shoulder tension patients feel while at work but not at home. The muscles involved are the trapezius, levator scapulae, and neck flexors. These muscles are related to the stomach/spleen meridians, which are about our feelings of self-esteem and connectedness.
Some areas of the back have so many different layers of muscle involved that many emotional imbalances can express themselves there. A good example is the low back. The most common emotional issues associated with the low back are fear and inability to let go.
In the process of adjusting a patient I find many of these imbalances and I make temporary corrections to rebalance the muscles. Sometimes I even work on the brain connections to shift the stuck emotional patterns. But ultimately healing the chronic pain patterns require the person to build better skills for relating to life. In general terms, that means shifting from negative ego patterns of relationship to positive ego relationships.

Our ego is our identity of separation from life. It is our perception of being an individual self, distinct from others. We are born with a very weak sense of self that has a very limited view of reality with itself as the center of everything. Everything is seen as an extension of us and exists only to serve us. This viewpoint creates hoards of false beliefs, expectations, and behaviors that are the essence of our negative ego. Growing up is the process of swapping out the false beliefs, expectations, and behaviors with positive and virtuous beliefs, expectations, and skilled behaviors.
This is exactly what is needed to heal the body as well as the mind. Today I focused on muscle and joint pain consequences to emotional imbalances caused by negative ego functioning. But those meridian pathways also go to all our organs and glands. Emotions are directly connected to our health in every part of our body.
How do we do this? That is a huge subject and one best pursued with the guidance of someone who is able to read the messages your body is telling you to help you navigate your personal path to healing and growth. A good life-affirming counselor that is focused on building good character and virtuous life skills is invaluable. In our office we have Ellen Flowers who uses this philosophy in her Life Coaching.

But the most basic tool for self-growth I know I call "The Mirror of Life". It is simply the understanding that we create the experience of our life 100%. We are fundamentally only emotionally attentive to things in life that mirror parts of ourselves we want to heal or connect with. So anytime you find yourself with a strong emotion about anyone or anything, see and know that this is a reflection of some part of yourself on a feeling level. Use this to discover yourself. It is amazing.
Take care,
David

A New Adventure
Fair Oaks Healing & Arts Center is starting a new adventure. Last week I made an offer on an incredibly old and distressed building to serve as the new home for our center. As many of you know the building we are currently in is up for sale. Since we have no idea what a new owner might want to do with existing tenants, we decided to get proactive and find a more stable home. As you might guess, commercial buildings are not cheap, so the only way to enter the ownership world is to buy a serious fixer-upper. If the sale goes through, we will be starting on a grand adventure as we work to turn this ugly duckling into a swan.
Stay tuned for more excitement as the situation develops. we decided

Overeating linked to memory loss
Simply the number of calories you eat may produce cognitive impairment. Studies on folks between the ages of 60 and 70 show that the more calories they ate, the worse they did on tests measuring their ability to think. Those eating 2100 calories per day had twice the chances of having cognitive impairment than those that ate 1600 calories per day. This is just the tip of the iceberg of course. We already know that obesity causes brain damage. Now it appears that eating more calories than you readily burn interferes with your ability to think.

Sinus infection? Antibiotics don't help.
A new study in the AMA Journal confirms what many of us have already experienced - antibiotics are worthless for sinus infections. They are no better than sugar pills. Doctors prescribe antibiotics because we demand they give us something for our problem. This is a bad choice on our part as the antibiotics produce considerable secondary harm while providing no benefit. In a previous newsletter I reported that 95% of chronic sinus infections are actually fungal infections and best treated with thyme oil based products. Sudden onset sinus infections are best treated with a simple sinus rinse with a little xylitol added to it. No antibiotics are needed - your body will handle it on its own.

How you see others is really about how you are.
University of Nebraska-Lincoln researchers have found how you perceive co-workers to be, even imaginary coworkers, relates directly to how you are. The more you naturally see those around you in a positive light and functioning with productive skills, the more positive and productive you are found to be. I call this the Mirror of Life, and have used this principle to "see" myself for many years. Generally we are invisible to ourselves and simply don't see who we actually are. But we can see reflections of ourselves in how we see and feel about other people.
