Toxic Tolerance

 Hi ,

It's a poisonous world out there.  And not just out there but in here in the room you are in, in the air you breathe, in the water you drink, in the food you eat - it is everywhere.

Top 10 U.S. Government Priority
List of Hazardous Substances

1. Arsenic
2. Mercury
3. Vinyl Chloride
4. Polychlorinated Biphenyls
5. Benzene
6. Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons
7. Cadmium
8. Benzopyrene
9. Fluoranthane
10. Benzofluoranthane

Arsenic is in the water supply in many areas, in some fruit juices, wood decks, pesticides, insecticides, and so on.  Mercury is in florescent lights, batteries, fillings in your teeth, immunizations, ground water, etc...  Vinyl chloride is everywhere - it is your flexible plastics.  The list goes on.

The nice thing about a top 10 list is it makes you feel like someone is watching and trying to take care of these threats to our survival.  They aren't.  The list is meaningless.  80% of newly created chemicals are never tested for toxicity and there are thousands of new ones invented every year.  We have literally no idea what our toxic exposure is day to day.

What about the ones we do know about like those in the top 10 list?  Can't we test for those in our bodies?  Yes we can, and it is worthless.  Healthcare practitioners have been testing for and treating for things like lead, arsenic, mercury, and aluminum for 50 years and the one thing that really stands out is that the tested levels have no relationship to the level of illness in a given patient - more about this in a moment.

What about chelation therapy for getting rid of these toxic metals like mercury that we have all been exposed to?  It turns out that most of the ways this is done are also a bad idea except in acute toxic exposure situations.  Our body tries to safely store these poisons in tissues like bones and fat.  When you pull them out to get rid of them, they end up back in the blood stream, and much of it ends up depositing in the brain.  The little that is excreted does not warrant the huge increase in brain damage that results from the process of trying to get rid of it.

Well, if the world is so toxic, why am I still alive?  The answer is that we are not defenseless.  Most toxins work by either latching on to our enzymes and stopping their function or by stealing the energized parts of living molecules that make them work.  When we are healthy we manufacture a substance called glutathione which can either latch onto the poison and inactivate it or give the poison the energy packets it wants to steal so it will leave the rest of our body alone.

Glutathione is our toxic defender against a toxic world.  Glutathione is also one of the most researched substances in biochemistry - over 85,000 articles have been written on it.  So why have we not heard more about it?  The science has not hit mainstream yet because there is no reliable commercial lab test for checking glutathione in the general population.  And more importantly there are no patentable drugs that exist yet for increasing our glutathione levels.  So no one has a way to make money from all this information they have found on our toxic defender.

One of the more interesting findings that has gradually emerged from all this research, is that a whole slew of unrelated diseases like heart disease, cancer, diabetes, asthma, autoimmune diseases all show a similar pattern.  The disease does not happen, even when the genetics says it should, until our glutathione levels get low.  Many of our favorite diseases don't start until after our toxic defender (glutathione) drops below a certain point.

This keen observation has given rise to a whole new model for chemical toxicity in humans called TILT - Toxicant Induced Loss of Tolerance.  We now understand that in our modern world, the presence of poisons is not as important as our individual tolerance to poisons in general.  The stronger our glutathione defense system is, the more poison our system can tolerate.  We have the ability to neutralize poisons as long as we don't overwhelm the defender system.

What does it look like when our system is weak because of toxic stress overload?  One easy example is all those folks that are overly sensitive to chemicals in the world.  If you react to gas fumes, or cigarette smoke, or perfumes, or chemicals in clothing - your system is on defender overwhelm.  Without a strong defense, you are a disease waiting to happen.  What disease is just a matter of your genetics and your environmental exposures.

The key point to understand is that everyone will have a different response to a given toxic exposure - depending upon differences in the strength of each person's chemical defense system.  We see this all the time in such things as the 1 in a thousand that have a toxic reaction to an immunization, or the 1 in 20 that get real sick when exposed to mold, or the fact that only some people in an office will come down with the flu.  It is all about the strength of our defense system.

One extra charming bit of research findings - half of us do not have the genes that tell our body to produce enough glutathione.  That means half of us have a weak defense against toxic chemical exposure.  If we manage to avoid toxic substances, we will never know we are not able to defend ourselves adequately.  But as the level of environmental toxicity is rising every year, more and more people are showing up with diseases that relate to low glutathione defense - like autoimmune diseases, cancer, asthma, food and chemical sensitivities, and so on.

So what can we do?  Unfortunately it is worthless to take glutathione orally as it is either destroyed in the gut or neutralized in the liver.  Fortunately all this research has uncovered many natural substances that help us maximize our glutathione levels.  First of all glutathione is made from sulfur containing amino acids which are found in onions, garlic, egg yolks, and cabbage family vegetables.  It is these amino acids that give these foods their rotten egg smell.  The most potent amino is N-Acetyl L-Cysteine.  Also vital are alpha lipoic acid, L-glutamine, and selenium.  Herbs that are useful include cordyceps, gotu kola, and silybum marianum.

Apex Energetics has recently started producing a product called Glutathione Recycler that has these substances in it specifically for helping us rebuild our chemical defense systems.  How much do you need?  Everyone is different.  If you are really chemically sensitive you could need ten capsules twice a day while a more average person may only need a couple capsules twice a day.  You take as much as you need to improve your condition.

I started using five capsules twice a day recently and within three days it significantly improved an autoimmune caused rash on both my arms.  I am continuing to take it to help me rebuild my leaky gut issues.  I think this stuff is great and feel very encouraged that I will finally get ahead of the autoimmune attack on my gut and brain (short-term memory issues.)

A side benefit of glutathione is that not only is it our primary defense against toxic poisons (like chemotherapy) but it also is our main defense against radiation damage of healthy tissues.  So if I were facing any kind of chemo or radiation treatment, I would make sure my glutathione levels were at their max before I started.

This is cutting edge science that your family physician probably won't know anything about until some pharmaceutical company invents a drug to stimulate us to build more glutathione.  When that happens you can bet it will be all over the news.  Until then, those of us that don't want to wait until that happens are going to benefit from all the research by rebuilding our toxic defense systems now.  The world is not going to get any less toxic, so it is up to us to get stronger.

Take care and enjoy your holidays,

David

Tai Chi Finale

Last week I was treated to a demonstration of the skill level our class members have achieved over the last few months.  This was their final class for the year.  New classes will be starting up in January - see the enclosed letter from their instructor Kathy.

Tai Chi News

We have just finished up the second session of tai chi classes at the Fair Oaks Healing & Arts Center.  The first session was 5 weeks long, two classes per week.  The second session was 10 weeks long and was one class per week.  Some students took assessment tests prior to the beginning of their first set of classes, and again at the end.  I am happy to report that everyone in that group improved at the end of each session!  Other students that did not participate in the assessment also felt that they had improved their balance.
Better balance = reduced fall risk!

Tai chi is a low impact exercise - it does not require jarring of the joints, so it is great for arthritis patients.  It is a gentle exercise that works the tendons, ligaments and muscles, and is also a weight bearing exercise which is good for people that have a problem with bone loss (osteoporosis).  It is also an exercise that helps to calm the nervous system by linking breath, movement and meditation.

There are several ways to practice.  We have been working with the Tai Chi for Better Balance 8 movement program, Set One of the Yang style form which we performed while seated, standing stationary, and moving.  On our last day, the 3:30 class, Marchand, Sammie, Carol and Pat performed a demonstration for Dr. DeLapp - tai chi using fans!  That was fun for us all!
At the end of our last session I asked everyone to fill out a questionnaire to see what they liked about the program and/or what they thought would improve the class.  Thank you everyone for participating in answering these questions.  Your comments were very helpful.  Here is some of the feedback that I received:  "Takes the additional time to properly review the form."  "Keeps it interesting, doesn't go too fast."  "She is patient and helps me to relax."  "Encouragement."  "Illustrates our moves very well."  "Kathy is so patient and her instructions are very clear and organized."  "I like the class."

So, if you have thought about taking a tai chi class, but just weren't sure about where to go....come join us!  Our next 10 week session starts the week of January 9th.  Please call the office for information 916 966-4714.

Could Cutting Carbs Cut Breast Cancer Risk?

Being overweight or obese has been found to increase women's breast cancer risk -- particularly after menopause.  A recent study being presented at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium demonstrated that cutting carbs down just 2 days a week while eating healthy fats and lean meats did better at producing weight loss than following a calorie restricted Mediterranean diet.  A 2002 study suggested that up to 18,000 breast cancer deaths a year might be prevented if women over 50 maintained a Body Mass Index of under 25.

YikeBike

This is a really cool concept I found on the web a couple days ago - the YikeBike.  It is an electric folding bike that collapses down to the size of the front wheel and can be easily carried and stowed beside your desk at work or onto a bus.  You sit upright and let your hands fall naturally down to handlebars beside your hips.  A single charge will zip you around for 6-8 miles, and if you need to go further you can take along extra battery packs.

About Dr. DeLapp

Dr. DeLapp has been a philosopher, non-force Chiropractor, medical intuitive, and health innovator for over 30 years.  He began experimenting with  medical intuition in 1972 while studying physics at UC Davis.  In addition to physics he designed and completed an individual major in the philosophy and psychology of education.  Shortly after he choose to pursue a career in the only truly health oriented profession available at that time, Chiropractic.  He graduated with honors in 1981 with his doctorate and opened a private practice.
Since that time he has continued his research into the effects of consciousness and learning on health.
He developed the Biomagnetic Retraining system for correcting movement abnormalities.
Since 1991 he has focused on developing a powerful system for uncovering and assisting the mind-body connection in health and personal growth.  The in-depth coaching, guided by the subconscious direction from the body, is called Heartflow and the simpler mind-body retraining for health and unfoldment he has named Gracework.  Both are available at Fair Oaks Health.
