Insight

 Hi ,

The holiday season is fast approaching us.  Many of us have been busy for some time now either making presents or purchasing them in preparation for the festivities to come.  The tradition of gift giving is central to the celebration of the holidays within the mainstream American home.

Beyond the tradition and symbology of the giving of gifts, what is the deeper feeling reason for the tradition?  The core feeling of celebration at this time of year lies in the almost universal celebration of the winter solstice .  This time of year represents the end of the increasing dark and begins the return of the daylight as the days begin to get longer.  Winter solstice is a message of hope for the return of the warmth and light of the sun.  Hope is the feeling we see in the eyes of children this time of year as they begin to anticipate receiving their desired presents.

It is not just a hope of receiving, as the crestfallen faces of children who get practical presents like socks, shows so clearly.  No, children have very specific things they are hoping for.  Each child is hoping for that special toy that will make them feel like their dreams have come true.  Each child has different dreams, just as we all do.  Our dreams are about being able to express our inner feeling drives and feeling truths in our outer life.  If we dream of being powerful then any toy that helps us feel powerful while playing with it will be loved.  If we want to feel beautiful, then toys that help us feel beautiful will thrill us no end.  I see our thrill as being driven by our inner blueprint seeking to manifest itself.  What do you want to feel?

For me curiosity and creativity are my driving blueprint forces.  Anything that stimulates and satisfies my curiosity or supports my creativity are the special gifts I value most.  But there is one major problem with holiday gifts - they are only one time a year.  Waiting all year for the magical chance to engage and play with my hungry inner blueprint is simply not enough.  This dependency on parents and family to supply me with the stuff of my dreams does not fly well.

Perhaps this is on purpose.  Hope is to motivate us.  Getting a taste of our dreams manifest in the form of a holiday present may push us into action to create our own dream manifestation.  The buildup to the holidays when I was a child was spent pouring over catalogues of toys to try to get a feel for what I just had to have.  What was the single coolest toy in the catalog?  What present would make me feel the best?  There were always several best toys, so I would have to narrow the choices down.  This was very difficult, but I knew that there would realistically only be a few presents under that tree for me, so I wanted to maximize my chances of getting what I wanted most by keeping it simple.  I am not sure I was terribly successful at this....

These days, my presents come in the form of insights in my life.  I get gifted with life puzzles to solve and if I am creative and truthful with myself, Spirit gifts me with an insight into myself that does the same thing presents did for me as a child - it gives me a chance to play with and manifest my dreams of a happier me.  Insights are like travelogues of places I want to visit and possibly live some day.  I get to have the feeling experience of what it would be and feel like to experience life from a new viewpoint and relationship to life.  But the powerful feeling of the insight is temporary.  I then have to build the skills and practice the skills to be able to actually live this new place of being.  It is kind of like spending my whole life walking everywhere then one day seeing a bicycle for the first time.  The ah-ha insight will show me how much easier my life would be if I could ride a bicycle instead of walking.  For a moment I feel wonderful living within this vision of future happiness.  But then I have to come back to the reality of my life and figure out how I am going to build or buy a bicycle.  Once I achieve that goal I have to learn how to actually ride the darn thing.

This is the work of growing up that most people try to ignore.  I have been trained in many counseling and personal growth processes that are all based on personal insight.  All of them feel great initially, but fail eventually because they fall down on the actual work end of the growth.  The ah-ha of insight is great, but it is only the first step on a thousand-mile journey.  The insight is the magical Christmas present that is supposed to motivate us to walk forward and do the work to manifest our dreams ourselves.

In this holiday season, I would urge each of you to find what inspires you.  Support the growth of your happiness.  Happiness comes from you being able to live your inner feeling truths.  The outer world of things are just the props we use in our play of self expression.  Feeling truths have nothing to do with beliefs you have been verbally taught, but are the deep inner virtues in who you are that you have to gift the world with.  We are each gifts to the world.  Giving those we love the gift of expressing our true self-virtues is one of the greatest gifts we can possibly give.  The second greatest gift we have to give is receiving the true virtues of those we love.  Appreciating them for who they really are is the other half of gifting them with our truth.

This is the season of hope.  Hope is to propel us forward into greater manifestation and expression of our personal virtues.  Support this unfoldment in those you love.  Let the increasing light of the newly forming year be matched by the increasing happiness in your life.

Take care and enjoy your holidays,

David

Ellen Update

Ellen went in last Tuesday for another down-the-throat ERCP procedure at Mercy hospital downtown.  The doctor's conclusion was that things were not any better and it was time to send Ellen down to San Francisco for more extensive testing where they will send an ultrasound camera down her throat to try to see why her bile duct is still kinked.  Ellen was hoping to avoid this trip to the bay area, but life has decided she is not finished with this experience yet.  We do not have a date for this new round of tests so we are just going ahead with our plans for celebrating the holidays up at my son's new house in Seattle.

FOHAC Staff takes a holiday cruise!

In spite of the appearance of being all work and no play, the staff at Fair Oaks Healing and Arts Center was seen recently goofing off on a holiday brunch and cruise on the Sacramento river.  The weather was glorious for us and good eats were had by all.  Santa visited with us and we were serenaded by live music as we wandered up and down the river.  Lorena, our blind massage therapist, even piloted the ship to turn us around and head back to port.

Butter shortage hits Norway

No, I am not making this up - though I had to research it in several places before I believed it myself.  A new fad diet which includes eating lots of butter has completely depleted the country's stores of butter.  Some folks have had to go weeks without butter.  Some scary stuff is happening out there this holiday.
