Weight Loss Fundamentals
part 2

 Hi ,

Exercise - here is an interesting seeming paradox.  Numerous studies have proven that aerobic exercise has no impact on weight loss.  In fact it often has a negative impact as the exercise makes you hungrier and you eat more than you would of if you hadn't exercised.  Yet other studies have shown that the only people that maintain their weight loss for 2 to 5 years are those that exercise regularly.  What is this about?  Probably there are a couple factors at work here.  A common myth is that lean muscle burns calories even at rest.  The more muscle you have, the more calories you burn each day whether you exercise or not.  Although this is not true as a pound of lean muscle only burns 5 to 6 calories per day at rest, people who exercise a lot have better insulin control - a critical factor in weight control.  Certain types of anaerobic training with weights and through brief extremely high-speed activities (typically 30 seconds at a time) have been found to temporarily to raise your metabolic rate so you burn more calories.  Exercise is also vital for brain health and the ability of your higher brain functions to inhibit your lower brain cravings and demands.  Exercise literally makes your will power stronger.  So even though the actual calories you try to burn exercising do not help you lose weight directly, in the long run it improves your strength of will and insulin levels and makes it easier to keep weight off that you have lost through dieting.

Weight is generally a combination of fat, water, and muscle mass.  Muscle is about twice as heavy as fat.  If you are on a diet that causes you to break down your muscles, you can be loosing pounds according to the scale, but can be losing only water and muscle and not fat.  You can even put fat on and still lose pounds by losing muscle.  This happens when your body stays in sugar burning mode because of eating too many carbs too often.  People with low blood sugar problems who eat every couple hours are prone to this problem.  Their bodies never go into fat burning so they convert their proteins into sugar to burn.  To lose fat weight, never eat carb or sugar containing snacks.

Probably the biggest block to losing weight is inflammation.  If you have an active inflammatory process going on in your body, your metabolism is so messed up weight loss just does not happen until you knock down that inflammation.  Inflammation will increase the stress hormone cortisol, which in turn greatly slows your thyroid gland.  A slow thyroid means a low metabolic rate (plus feeling really lousy and unmotivated.)  Inflammation causes a huge host of other problems to numerous to go into here, many of which throw off your ability to lose weight.

My own story with weight is a prime example.  I had been obese since age 8.  I have been on every type of diet imaginable almost continuously since that time.  Only fasting on water alone for 2 weeks at a time could make a dent in my weight.  I always found it interesting that I always felt better when I water fasted.  This should have been a clue.  Two years ago I found out that I was gluten intolerant.  This gluten intolerance had triggered autoimmune disease within my body so my body was super inflamed all the time and was/is attacking its own body cells.  Two years ago I cut gluten out of my diet as well as foods that mimicked gluten - all dairy and all grains.  As the trigger to the autoimmune reaction was eliminated my inflammation began to settle down and I started to lose weight.  Metabolically my body also has a really hard time burning fats so I have had to force it into fat burning mode by eliminating carbs from my diet.  In fact it is so sensitive to carbs that after two years of staying off them I allowed myself to try to eat sugars (but still no grains or dairy) between Thanksgiving and New Years - and put on 23 pounds without overeating (except the batch of gluten free gingersnaps I made Christmas eve.)

Another consideration in losing weight is the quality of your gut bacteria.  There are two general classifications of gut bacteria - Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes.  Firmicutes make you fatter.  They break down a lot of the fiber in food that normally we can't absorb and produce calories we then can absorb and turn into fat.  In mouse studies (mice have very similar guts to us), you can take a skinny mouse, put him on a diet, but place Firmicutes bacteria in his gut and he will get fat.  The less you eat, the more the balance shifts from Firmicutes to the lean making Bacteroidetes.  This lends credence to the old wisdom of always leaving the table before you get full.  Overeating tends to build the fat causing bacteria levels.  Eating the right prebiotic fibers that support the right bacteria is just one more aspect to the weight loss puzzle.

As you can see the weight loss story is very complex and very individual.  There are so many diets out there because there are so many differences between people - different diets work for different people.  The information presented here will help you choose which diet is a good place for you.  Diets that try to ignore basic rules of the body should be avoided.  Next letter I will discuss a method that incorporates the most powerful aspect of all the available information that I have designed and that has worked for me.

Happy New Year,

David

Diet can stop brain from shrinking

While many researchers have suggested that various nutrients will protect our brains while we age, a first study that actually measured blood levels of vitamins and omega 3 fats has shown that elderly folks with high levels of these nutrients had less brain shrinkage and performed better on mental capacity tests.  The worst scores were found in those folks that had trans fats in their blood.  This is the type of fat found in most junk food, so junk food literally shrinks your brain and makes you stupid.

Aspirin has no effect on preventing heart attacks

50 million Americans take a daily aspirin in an effort to reduce their chances of stroke and heart attack.  The latest research shows that this is not only worthless but actually dangerous.  There is no reduction of fatal heart attacks with aspirin use, but there is a huge rise in internal bleeding that may kill you.  Once again, the more people that believe something is true, the greater the chance that it is false (Hitcher's Guide to the Galaxy - Douglas Adams.)
