Natural Medicine Chest part 3
Hi ,

In parts 1 and 2 we covered external antiseptics and internal good bacteria support. That covers our friendly (and unfriendly) relationships with the world of bacteria other than the updated information on the super powers of Thyme oil for fighting fungus and mold infections in the sinuses, throat, ears, GI tract and everywhere else fungus likes to hide out. Since Thyme oil is so powerful, care has to be taken to use it in a very diluted form such as the Boogy Buster nose spray and Good Thyme gargle available in the office.

But what about some of our other natural medicine chest needs like pain relief? Well for sunburn pain nothing beats good old aloe vera gel. Try to find a good quality pure gel (try here) and not some grocery store brand sunburn gel that might contain a few percent of actual aloe vera in it. Of course the best relief is not getting burned in the first place, and the best protection for sunburn is getting enough vitamin D. Yes, vitamin D protects you from sunburn - often increasing your resistance by 50 to 100% (meaning if you would burn in 10 minutes, now you might last 20 minutes.) I don't recommend sunblockers, as they are all pretty toxic, and don't protect you from skin cancer anyway. Instead they give you the illusion you can stay out in the sun much too long since the do block the turning red sunburn process.
For muscle stiffness and soreness there is nothing like traditional Arnica Montana homeopathic pellets. A wonderful pain blocking rub-on or spray most of you have already tried at the office is Biofreeze. I will even use the spray Biofreeze for the occasional itching relief. For deeper trauma to muscles, inflamed tissues, and even ligament injury I use Super Oxicell to get metabolic inflammation fighters right into the tissues.
A natural replacement for systemic inflammation, headaches, arthritic pain, post injury muscle and ligament pain, and the like I use a combination of proteolytic (meaning protein breaking down) enzymes and white willow bark (the natural aspirin). Sports medicine doctors have been using high doses of enzymes for 30 years with football teams and other high injury sports to reduce swelling and cut healing time in half. In my medicine chest is a product called Purozyme which is designed to do just this.
How about something simple like Band-Aids? Well a couple years ago I found a replacement that is just amazing. There is nothing natural about them, but they work so well they have a place in my medicine chest. They are called Nexcare. They have them at the pharmacy for outrageous amounts of money for a tiny box, or you can buy them online here for a great price. They do what a Band-Aid does, just a lot better. They stick better, are more flexible, thinner and clear so they look better, and they come of with less pain. They are great.

Lets touch briefly on the whole subject of deodorants. Yes, they are necessary in this world today. There are several good varieties out there, but you will find that different ones work better for different people. Personally the Crystal type works well for me, and they last forever (found here). Trader Joe's has a nice stick with cotton fibers in it for some absorbency. But what we really want to avoid is the antiperspirants. The aluminum in these has been linked to Alzheimer's as it is able to absorb into the body through the skin. Aluminum is a super oxidizer that creates havoc anywhere it travels in the body.

Other odds and ends in the natural medicine chest might include a natural insect repellant made from Lemon Eucalyptus oil such as Repel. It has been found to be just as effective as the more common DEET without the toxins. If you do get bit old fashioned Witch Hazel (found here) is just the remedy. As an astringent it will shrink the swollen blood vessels down. This property also makes it useful for such conditions as bruises, hemorrhoids, acne, psoriasis, and eczema.
The last big section of the medicine chest has makeup and skin care products in it. Here we want to think natural - like in organic real products. Everything you put on your skin gets sucked into your body. In general, if you wouldn't feel comfortable swallowing it, then don't put it on your skin. I have been experimenting with making skin salves with Shea butter, Cocoa butter, coconut oil, virgin olive oil, grape seed oil and adding in various essential oils. This is a fun new playground for me. So far it is easy to do and produces very nice results.

There are tens of thousands of cosmetics out there, and most of them range from mildly toxic to horribly toxic. Your best reference is EWG's Skin Deep cosmetic database. They cover over 69,000 products, telling you the ingredients and rating how toxic each ingredient is. Find out what is hiding in your bathroom - if you dare!
Many of you have found excellent medicine chest essentials. If you feel they fall in the natural medicine chest category, email me your favorite product names and I can do a patient's favorites issue of the Natural Medicine Chest. Mail to david@fairoakshealth.com. I have included several links to these various products on Amazon for those of you that prefer shopping from the comfort of your computer chair.
Take care,
David

Eat More Fiber
We have all heard this one for a long time - mostly as it relates
to having regular bowel movements. This is certainly important on a
comfort level, but what is the real reason fiber is important? Life is
toxic. Living systems produce toxic waste and that waste has to be
eliminated or else the system becomes poisoned and disease shortly
follows. Every cell in your body produces toxic chemicals as they
manufacture the energy and substances they need to live. Your hormones
and neurotransmitters and hundreds of other biochemical products become a
toxic burden to the body once they have done their jobs.
We
tend to think that our bowel movements are just the leftovers from what
we ate...not true. The most important component of your bowel movements
are the toxic breakdown products of your body's chemistry. Your liver
gathers these poisons, breaks them down, and excretes them into your
small intestine. Here is why fiber is so critical. These poisons have
to bind to various fibers to be carried out of the body to be
eliminated. If there is insufficient fiber, these poisons will be
re-absorbed back into your bloodstream. Fiber carries out the poisonous
trash of your body.
Our ancestors regularly ate 100 to 200
grams of fiber a day. The average American is lucky if he gets 10 to 15
grams of fiber daily. We have processed out the fiber from our diet.
Very little fiber means we are gradually being poisoned from the inside
out. Where do we get fiber? You guessed it, vegetables, fruits, nuts,
and legumes. For those that can tolerate them, whole grains (and that
means actually eating the whole grain, not some flour that has been
allowed to sit around for hours or days and gone rancid) are also a good
source.

Immune system cause found for Chronic Fatigue
A couple years ago I started telling patients that chronic fatigue is really an auto-immune disease in which your immune system is attacking your own body on many levels including the brain. This research study accidentally found the same result. A cancer drug that shuts down the white blood cells called lymphocytes was found to dramatically improve chronic fatigue in many patients. It is the activity of these lymphocytes attacking our brains and other organs that creates the inflammation experienced as chronic fatigue. Fortunately there are better natural ways to calm down the system than a cancer drug for leukemia.

Happiness linked to longer life
We have always suspected that happiness makes you healthier in general, but this research shows it actually helps you live longer. In this study older people were up to 35% less likely to die during the five-year
study if they reported feeling happy, excited, and content on a typical
day. Happiness stimulates healthy immune responses in the body and promotes healthy brain neurotransmitter functioning. Happiness is a learned skill. A few of us got those skills modeled for us by happy parents, but the majority of us have to learn the happiness skills through trial and error - or with the help of a good life coach (like Ellen).

Music played on wine glasses!
Dr Fischer forwarded this link to me the other day. It is a youtube video of a fellow playing the famous Bach organ piece Toccata and Fugue in D minor on tuned water glasses. This way of creating music was created back in 1791 and was quite popular in the 1800's. Called a Glass Harp, it makes a mystical angelic sound when the player wets their finger and rubs the rim of the different glasses which are tuned to different notes by being filled with different amounts of water. Enjoy...
