Family Reunion
Hi ,
For better or for worse, family is our most basic relationship in life. Our core beliefs and values about how life works and even the point of life are learned from our early experiences in family. Family is the ground we are planted in, and the soil that nurtures who we are to become as we grow up.
My extended family seemed to be filled with teachers, preachers, and doctors... all service professions. I can't think of a single family member that had anything to do with sales or production or anything else that related to actually making money. No. we were a service family. My grandmother had 8 brothers and sisters and that whole extended family got together every Thanksgiving. As generations passed it became just my grandmother's children that got together - my mother, her sister and brother, and their kids. They are the grandparents now, on the cusp of becoming great grandparents.

Most of us still reside in Northern California, but my brother Daniel moved up to the Portland, Oregon area to a 24 acre farm where he grows most of his own food and his wife Satya has her acupuncture clinic. He also amuses himself by being the director of the clinic at Western States Chiropractic college in Portland and moonlighting teaching at the local Naturopathic college and the acupuncture college. Here he is pulling some potatoes out of his garden for potato salad that night.
For years there has been talk of having a reunion up at his farm, and last weekend it finally happened. Some of us were able to grab treatment rooms in the upstairs clinic to use as bed rooms while many others camped out around the property.
Since 35 people showed up meals were pretty much a free-form chaos. Here we have Satya whipping up a huge omelet with some dried salsa we brought with us to give it a little kick. Another morning I made up a gluten free coffee cake (recipe here) made from a couple bags of my Miracle Bread and some spices, ghee, and Dr. Dave sugar. Present at every meal however was fresh blueberries and cherries. Yes, I definitely ate my weight in blueberries while I was there. There is just something about fresh blueberries that my brain can't resist.
The farm was beautiful and the weather great. Oregon is so green (due to the frequently rainy weather).

It is a good thing to just have some relaxed time with family. My youngest son Mason was not able to join us in person so he teleconferenced with us via Skype - here he is with my mother and oldest son Devon. We could carry him around to talk with people and so he could see what the farm looked like through the camera in the computer screen. Isn't technology amazing...
I would say a good time was had by all. Here my 83 year old aunt Sylvia was playing a killer match of ping pong. Lots of hikes were organized as well as lawn games, and warm swims in my brother's salt water solar heated swimming pool. But mostly it was just a chance to kick back and relax with family (at least when I wasn't cooking!)
All in all at the end of the day, we get a chance to see who we are by where we came from. We see that all we really have in life is relationships. Everything else is just stage props. Life is a shared journey - how we share it is the point.
Good Journey,
David
Ellen Update:
We had a little more excitement this week in the Ellen gallbladder saga. Tuesday she went into a fever with a lot of shaking. Her gastroenterologist insisted she go to emergency in case she had developed a nasty infection or abscess in the surgery site. So we spent Tuesday night in emergency doing CAT scans and x-rays and blood work. No infection was found but the stent she had put in three weeks ago looked as though it was failing. They let us go home and got her in Thursday for another ERCP procedure down her throat to replace the stent again. Well once they got in there they found another stone - a type that does not show up on x-ray. The procedure went well and Ellen spent Friday recovering at home. Perhaps this hidden stone is part of what has been bothering her all this time. In any event she is feeling better than she has in quite some time. Thanks for your concern and prayers.
Praise for Purify Oil
Love the Purify
One quality you did not mention, but I
rightly suspected, is cajeput's ability to numb pain and itch--almost
acts like an anti-histamine. I used it on mosquito bites and it calmed the
insane itch right down and reduced the swelling quickly. Thanks.

Tai Chi class
Class times are Monday and Wednesday afternoons at 2:30, 3:30, and 5:30. The initial 10 classes are twice a week and the followup series of 10 classes will be one time per week. Several people had to drop out of a couple classes, so space is still available for the earliest and later class. The cost for cash participants is $99 per round of 10 classes. Those starting late would only pay for the classes remaining. Each class is limited to only 4-5 people.
Announcement: Office hours are changing - our short day will be changing from Wednesday to Thursday to accommodate the Tai Chi class. So we will be open 9am to 1pm on Thursdays and 9-1,3-6 on Wednesdays.

Money can't buy happiness
In a huge meta anaysis of studies from 63 countries spanning 40 years of research the conclusion is that once you have enough money to meet your basic survival needs, more money does not add to your happiness - if anything it decreases it. What has been found to increase happiness and well being across all cultures is a culture of individualism - to a point. To quote the authors of the study analysis " in some of the most individualistic societies (such as the United
States), the greater independence from family and loved ones appears to
go together with increased levels of stress and ill-being." So individualism is good if you don't have it, but too much of a good thing backfires. We need the freedom to live and be our truth, but we also need the connections of family to be happy. Life is about balance in all things. Eventually in another million scientific studies they will prove this simple and obvious truth.
