Creating your Natural Medicine Chest part 2

 Hi ,

In part 1 we talked about creating a natural medicine chest that was filled with natural medicines that support the body instead of inhibiting body functions to achieve their effects.  Last time we covered what I use for antiseptics (bacteria killers) such as the Purify Oil,  DAG, and Colloidal Silver for use on wounds of any sort.  But what about things like sinus infections or bladder infections?

Personally I use Colloidal Silver in a nasal spray bottle, but if the problem is deep in the sinuses, a spray bottle just does not reach those areas.  For deep areas of the sinus I use a sinus rinse bottle like NeilMed, except that instead of using their prepackaged saline powder, I use a similar amount of Xylitol sugar alcohol.  Xylitol coats the tissues and prevents the bacteria from clinging to the sinus walls.  This means they are flushed away with the sinus drainage and killed in the stomach (assuming your stomach is properly producing hydrochloric acid.)

Chewing gum made with Xylitol has the same beneficial effect for getting rid of the bacteria around your teeth.  Another exotic sugar I use works the same way with bacteria, but is for the urinary tract - Mannose.  It is the mannose content of cranberries that give them the power to fight urinary tract infections.  Using straight mannose is much more effective.  Additionally I will use large doses of vitamin C - too high to be absorbed and used by the body - which is then dumped out through the kidneys.  The vitamin C being dumped in the urine interferes with the bacteria's ability to grow.

The third area inside the body we need to manage bacteria in is the colon.  A healthy colon can have as many as 500 different kinds of healthy bacteria growing in it and 10X more bacteria cells in our gut than total number of human cells in our body.  We exist in a mutually supportive relationship with these healthy bacteria.  Without their help we would die.  Similar bacteria cover our entire outer skin.  Healthy bacteria create a barrier to keep bad bacteria and fungi out.  To protect ourselves from bad bacteria, fungi and viruses we need to support the health of our good bacteria.  This is done with eating the right foods, prebiotic fibers, and consuming replacement good bacteria.

This part of the Natural Medicine Chest actually lives in your kitchen.  This Natural Medicine comes in the form of yogurt, raw cheese, fermented vegetables (like sauerkraut, kimchee, and real pickles), natural vinegars, kombucha, kefir, real sour dough, and the unwashed skins of natural fruits and vegetables (like plums, grapes, and tomatoes)(a light water rinse is ok.)  Washing off the pale film on fruit and veggies washes off the good bacteria we are designed to eat.  Be sure you are eating homegrown or organic fruits and veggies so you don't end up eating more pesticides than good bacteria.

An easier way to replenish your good bacteria is with a good probiotic product made from these good bacteria.  My personal favorite is Primal Defense because it has so many different strains of bacteria in it - plus I contacted the company and found they test their batches for gluten (a health issue for me) and it is a gluten free product.  Another favorite is Strengthia because it focuses on the strains of bacteria that will survive passage through the stomach.

Taking probiotics, and prebiotic fibers (such as found in my Miracle bread), daily supports keeping our intestinal lining healthy.  I don't know of a similar way to treat the outer skin of our body, but we can certainly avoid some of the popular ways our culture has come up with to destroy the healthy bacteria that are trying to protect our skin.  I am talking about the use of hand sanitizers...a bad idea.  Numerous studies have shown that the use of hand sanitizers actually increases the outbreak and frequency of colds and viruses.  This is because they destroy the protective layer of good bacteria on our hands that are there to keep the bad bacteria out.  Unless you are working in a hospital ward where you know you are touching lots of very nasty bacteria all the time, stay away from hand sanitizers.

I also go one step further by filtering my shower water to remove chlorine as the chlorine tries to kill the healthy bacteria on my skin.  Additionally I use reverse osmosis to purify my drinking and cooking water to eliminate chlorine, fluoride, lead, petrochemicals, and other poisons.  I guess aspects of my medicine chest are all over the house.  Supporting the body to enhance health is a lot more involved than just swallowing pharmaceuticals.

It is a delicate balance trying to support the good bacteria in our body while getting rid of the bad bacteria.  Sometimes we have to get specific and get rid of negative bacteria, fungi, and parasites from our GI tract.  So from my medicine cabinet I pull out GI Synergy - a combination of HPLR for killing gut bacteria, Yeastonil for killing fungi and molds, and Parastonil for killing parasites.

The overall objective is to reduce the poison load on the body and support its natural defense mechanisms.  The goal is not to completely eliminate all threats to the immune system, just to gently control them enough that the body can deal with them on its own.  Trying to create a completely sterile and safe environment backfires.  If your immune system has nothing to fight it tuns on itself - it starts to attack your own body.  Children raised around the dirt and challenge of pets and farm animals have much less problem with allergies and autoimmune diseases.  Our immune system has to be regularly challenged to stay strong and keep focused on outer challenges instead on attacking our own tissues.

So the message here is to not get hyper-vigilant about eliminating germs, but instead focus on supporting the natural pathways we have to protect ourselves by building a strong immune system and a healthy relationship with our good bacteria friends.  If we get sick, support our body's natural methods of eliminating disease instead of trying to suppress symptoms and kill every germ in sight.

Take care of yourself.

Good Journey,

David

Cutting down on salt doesn't reduce your chance of dying

Despite what we have all been told for the last 50 years, the science just isn't there.  Large scale studies and combinations of studies do not show any reduction in death rates from moderate reduction of salt in the diet.  If you have high blood pressure, your body is holding on to salt for some reason - probably as a consequence of trying to ramp up energy production to meet stress.  Cutting down on sodium as part of a stress management program may help these people.  But for the average person there is no benefit from reducing your salt intake.
