State Fair Time!

 Hi ,

Where was I last weekend?  The State Fair!  How much I enjoy the fair is in direct proportion to how hot it is outside.  Last Sunday promised to be one of the nicest days for the fair ever - only 84 degrees tops.  With that promise I couldn't resist a little stroll around the grounds at the fair.

My first stop is always the industrial arts building and the fine arts building.  I love being amazed by the astounding woodworking projects of high school kids usually displayed in the industrial arts exhibit.  There was not much of that this year - kind of disappointing.  The fine arts building is my other favorite exhibit as I wander around checking out the creativity expressed there.  I was particularly drawn to a simple huge sculpture that reminded me of a cresting wave on a beach.  The easy clear lines yet intricate welding work made it look like a three-dimensional puzzle.

Then I wandered out to the food area.  I think I must be part masochist - food, food everywhere but nothing I can eat.  This whole gluten and casein intolerance thing coupled with eating healthy really squashes the enthusiasm I normally associate with the joy of attacking the State Fair gross-out food orgy.  I do believe I have discovered the secret cause of America's Obesity Epidemic.  Its State Fair Food!

After wandering from booth to booth for 45 minutes checking menus (and snapping pictures) I discovered there was literally nothing I could eat.  (Even the smoked turkey legs had been seasoned with soy sauce, which is made from wheat and soy.)  Ultimately I snacked on 2 items I found in the commercial exhibit buildings - a piece of beef jerky seasoned with honey and of all things, a demonstration fruit smoothie made by WalMart with a blender powered by pedal power provided by us fair goers.  I could have done without the teaspoon of sugar they added to the fresh fruit, but the average Californian is addicted to sugar and they wanted the smoothie to be a good public relations piece.

One of my personal insanities is I love kitchen gadgets.  I love watching all the cheesy demonstrations of the latest and greatest wonder gadget that I can't possibly live without.  I usually end up using these wonders three or four times before I forget that I even have them.

This year my must have item was a mini food vacuum sealer.  My old vacuum sealer never got used much because the sealing bags were so darn expensive.  This new sealer is really clever because you can reuse the bags 10-15 times.  They combine a zip-lock seal with a small puncture/seal spot that can be moved down the side of the bag.  Cool!  If you don't happen to make it out to the fair and really need to have one of these babies, I got home and found they were much cheaper on Amazon.  I guess the entertainment value of the demo was worth the price difference.

There were assorted other things to see at the fair, like the giant insect display, but after 5 hours I was ready to call it a day.  Another summer ritual is done.  Ahhh, life is good.

Take care of yourself.

Good Journey,

David

Ellen Update:

Ellen had her stent replacement Wednesday -  so far so good.  The doctor said the duct was more constricted than he liked so he wants to replace the stent again in only 6 weeks.  There was also some infection present so he put Ellen on some antibiotics.  Ellen must have moved around too much during the procedure because they gave her much heavier sedation than previously so she slept all of Wednesday and only slowly got going Thursday.
Thanks for your prayers - they do help.

Praise for Purify Oil
Love the Purify
One quality you did not mention, but I rightly suspected, is cajeput's ability to numb pain and itch--almost acts like an anti-histamine.  I used it on mosquito bites and it calmed the insane itch right down and reduced the swelling quickly.  Thanks.

On the Wire

Obesity 'leading driver' of breast cancer

Although I talked lightly about the American obesity epidemic in my lead article, it is really very serious.  Two thirds of Americans are over-weight or overtly obese.  Fat is not just a passive passenger on our frame...it poisons us.  It produces inflammatory chemicals that destroy our joints, organs, nerves, blood vessels, heart tissue and even trigger certain types of cancer.  Fat produces estrogen - enough to trigger estrogen sensitive breast cancer.
Even though fattening sugary foods trigger the addictive pleasure centers in our brains and make us forget our stress and pain, they also create the very things that cause us so much stress and pain - serious health problems.  There are other pleasures we can enjoy that do not destroy us at the same time.  Lets fill our lives with those kind of pleasures.
