New Farmers Market !
Hi ,
One of the best things you can do for your health is shop at a farmers market. The opportunity to buy fresh picked fruits and vegetables is just amazing. Generally the foods are only hours away from having been picked. The fresher the food, the more nutritious it is. Many of the farmers at these local farmers markets grow their fruits and vegetables organically - so that is a real bonus.
Last fall we had a little farmers market open up just a few blocks from my house organized by BeMoneySmartUSA, a local non-profit training company specializing in providing youth ages
8-adult with financial, business, and career education programs. It was delightful to get up early Sunday mornings and walk to the farmers market to buy the vegetables we would use for the week. They closed up for the winter and re-opened behind Sears at the Sunrise Mall a couple months ago. The farmers market that had been at that location had moved down to the Light Rail Station at Sunrise and Folsom.
We were glad to have the closer location back at Sunrise Mall, but last Sunday they opened a second, much nicer farmers market in Carmichael Park. Instead of being on an asphalt parking lot, this new one is under the trees and on the grass of Carmichael Park. The layout is also much nicer with the booths set up in a rough triangle, leaving a nice big central area to move around in.
Their variety was also greater in that it included some prepared foods, with a wood fired pizza oven, and fresh baked goods. I even bumped into one of my patients, Sabina, who was there selling mushrooms.
Getting there is super easy and excellent parking is available. Just go down Fair Oaks Blvd. to Grant Ave. and turn down Grant towards the park. Young lads dressed as fruit and vegetables were stationed at the corners to point the way.
The atmosphere is relaxed (you can even bring your dogs on leash), and there was a live band playing.
Maybe I will see you there.
Good Journey,
David
Ellen Update:
On Friday afternoon Ellen had another procedure done - an ERCP which sent a camera down her throat and up her bile duct to place a stint in the bile duct to open it up so that it will drain into the small intestine better. She has had bile draining into her abdomen for the last 15 days (and then out a tube in her abdominal wall.) The doctors have been waiting for the drainage to stop. They are hoping this new procedure will help that process. If that does not do the trick then they will have to open her up again and patch up the leak some way. So she is still in the hospital stuck in the bed with drains and tubes in and out of her. The thought that she would be home by now was in the doctor's words "prematurely optimistic." So the wait continues.

Saturday night 11pm update... Ellen had another MRI with contrast dye today. The stint has not slowed down the bile drainage. They are now thinking that the main duct from the right lobe of her liver got cut and is the source of the bile. They can't close it off because then it will back up into her blood stream as it has no where else to go. We have not heard if it is possible to repair or rebuild it. They may have to cut out that half of her liver - we don't know. We are awaiting further input about her options.
