Ellen Update

 Hi ,

As many of you know from my previous two posts, my companion Ellen has been dealing with gallbladder problems.  With fearless vulnerability she has engaged the medical establishment to resolve this issue surgically.  This was a necessary choice as it turns out.  She has had gallstones for at least 15 years (possibly many more), and her recent rash of gallbladder attacks was just too much.  Once the surgeon opened her up we found out why.  It seems the chronic inflammation in the gallbladder was promoting the formation of massive amounts of scar tissue around not only the gallbladder, but the liver and bile ducts.  This cause is a guess as her amount of scar tissue is not normal.  The surgeon said he had never seen such a bad case.  The scar tissue had deformed the organs in the area and pulled the duct system from the liver over 3 inches to the right from where it should have been.

Well Ellen has been in the hospital since April 21st.  Her blood levels of bilirubin (a liver waste product) have been going up and down and the surgical drain from the wound site has had varying levels of blood and bile from day to day.  During the surgery he almost cut through the common bile duct as it was not where it was supposed to be.  It was an intuition hit that something was wrong while he was poking around that kept him from snipping what looked like a lump of scar tissue.  In the mess at least one other smaller duct was cut and then tied off, but they were not sure that it was the only one.  Last Friday night the doctor ordered another MRI scan to try to find the source the varying drainage and blood levels by looking for either a blockage or a leak.

This morning (Saturday) we got the good news report that everything was looking good on the MRI.  The doctor wanted to do one other procedure to suck out any blood and bile that had leaked down into Ellen's lower abdomen this morning.  She called me at 10:30 to say they had come to get her for the procedure.  I am writing this as this is being done, after which I will be going down to the hospital to check on her.  If all goes well she will be able to come home in a couple days.

As we were chatting earlier this morning she was telling me that she wants to use this experience as the first step in a rejuvenation program for herself.  She has found the whole experience to be a wonderful growing opportunity, although she really did not like all the pain.  She has been making lots of friends at the hospital by getting to know all about the lives of the different nurses she has had.  She found her m
ost recent nurse had just finished a book about her life growing up in Kenya and the courage needed to change out of the life she knew.
My Dreams, My Choices
Most of the nurses Ellen has had have been from other countries, so she has heard many stories.

I for one will be glad to have Ellen back at home (although with all the time I have spent at the hospital I have probably seen her as much as usual).  She has received so much love and prayer from so many of you and she is very grateful for every bit of it.  It will be at least a week of recovery at home before she is back in the saddle at the office, so all you Ellen clients have just a bit longer to wait before your beloved Ellen is able to be of service once again.  She misses you all terribly.  You are all her family.

She will be returning with a whole fresh set of spiritual perspectives, as she has been learning key pieces about how to receive from others and life.  Learning how to ask for the participation of others in getting your needs met instead of expecting them to know what you need and do what you want opens up relationships into a whole new level...just something to look forward to.

Thanks for all your support,

Take care of yourself.

Good Journey,

David

Late night update:  I just got back from seeing Ellen.  The draining procedure went well except that they drained about 6 cups of bile from her lower abdomen.  A couple hours later they got another couple cups.  They are hoping that this is just bile that has accumulated over the last 10 days since the surgery.  If it keeps flowing then they know there is still a leak somewhere.  Ellen was feeling especially tired this evening - perhaps from coming down from the morphine.  We still have hope she will be coming home soon.

Off to bed now - good night.
