Stuffy Nose Support

 Hi ,

More folks have been coming in to the office lately with the seasonal stuffy nose and ears.  The most obvious approach to this problem is prevention.  There are a zillion herbal combinations that boost immune function as well as homeopathic formulations, vitamins, amino acids, and so on.  These have a well-respected place in our arsenal of non-toxic remedies for life's little ills.  But lets get even more basic... exercise.  Exercise boosts immune function.

In an article titled "Exercise may block colds"
MedPage Today reported on two recent studies showing those fit individuals that exercise 5 days a week have 43-46% fewer days of respiratory symptoms per year than those who only exercise one day per week or less.

So, even though the days are getting shorter and the desire to get out and play is getting less, now is the time to renew that gym membership and hit the carpet.  We are not talking about super jock workouts, just moderate aerobic workouts.  Personally I suggest daily aerobic interval training for 15 minutes.   Mix it up to get different body parts exercised.  Use an elliptical machine one day, stationary bike another, treadmill, rowing machine, stair stepper, whatever your gym has.  The idea is to warm up for a couple of minutes then go for a burst of speed for 30 seconds.  Just go as fast as you can for those 30 seconds then slow down and move gently for a couple of minutes.  After the 2-minute slow down go for another burst of speed for 30 seconds, then slow down again for 2 minutes.  Repeat this cycle 4 to 8 times (more cycles as your fitness improves).  That's it.  Your entire trip to the gym might take only 15 minutes out of your day.

If you don't want the whole gym experience, you can achieve the same benefits at home simply with a walk/sprint program.  Walk for 2 minutes then sprint for 30 seconds, then walk again for 2 minutes, then sprint and so on.  You can do the same thing with a bicycle - casual cycling and sprint cycling.

What about you older folks that aren't limber enough to go run around the block?  I see a lot of older folks at the gym I go to.  Most gym equipment is very adaptable to all levels of fitness.  But if it is even difficult to get out of the house, the same principles can be applied on a smaller scale at home.  One exercise I like to recommend is simply getting up and down from a chair.   Get yourself up and down from your chair as many times as possible for 20 to 30 seconds, rest for 2-3 minutes then get up and down again for another 20-30 seconds.  Repeat this cycle 2-5 times.  The idea is to feel a little winded and have your heart rate increase a bit.  As you get stronger, try to get up without using your hands to help yourself up.  Obviously, if you have a heart condition check with your specialist first to be sure your heart is up to the challenge.

Exercise is like everything in life: Every improvement comes at the expense of comfort.  Comfort creates degeneration.  Overcoming challenge creates growth.

But what if you already have a stuffy nose head cold?

Few things are as naggingly miserable as a stuffy nose.  What can you do that does not involve handfuls of drugs?  Many of you prefer not to be taking even over the counter medications if you don't have to.  There is a natural alternative.  The original and first Vitamin Company - Standard Process - has a natural substance discovered in 1920 that acts as an antihistamine to open up those stuffy noses and ears.  It is made from an extract of beef livers called Yatriton.  The product name is Antronex

I get good reports from my patients that have used it.  The per tablet dose is small so even children can use it.  An adult might want to use 3-6 tablets at a time.

Another natural substance that has strong antihistamine properties are bioflavonoids (rutin, hesperidin, quercetin, catechin).  Usually you see these added in small amounts to vitamin C.  To get a good antihistamine effect you need a very high dose, 3 to 6 grams a day.  With rutin you even strengthen your blood vessel walls to prevent swelling (also good for varicose veins).  The Standard Process natural bioflavonoid source is buckwheat juice in their product Cyruta Plus .  I have many patients who swear by this product.  We also use this product for normalizing blood fats and thinning the blood so that it flows freely through the veins and arteries.

These are a couple tools to help you navigate the season with good cheer.  So get moving, and if it is already too late, help is available in the form of Antronex and Cyruta Plus.

Good Journey,

David
