Alignment with Natural Law

 Hi ,

Happy New Year!

2010 is upon us.  A new chance to start fresh with our lives.  I hope your holidays were excellent; mine were.  I still have one party left to attend.  In another week my family is gathering to celebrate my mother's 80th birthday - Congratulations mom.  Where do the years go?

Most likely you will be reading this New Years weekend.  This is a potent time to set your new goals for the coming year.  What do you want in your life?  More specifically what feelings do you want to fill your life with?  Instead of trying to decide what things you want to create in your life, focus on what feelings you want to experience.  Staying focused on the feelings you want gives your creative efforts flexibility and adaptability, two key ingredients to successful manifestation.

Many people have asked me just what is it I do?  From one day to the next it seems as though I will have completely different focuses.  This very newsletter is an example of the diversity in the directions of my thought.  Yet behind all the diversity is a common thread, a single focus and goal...alignment with natural law.  My constant effort as a doctor is to align my patients with natural law.  My actions and words are to adjust patient's bones, bodies, energies, lifestyles, emotions, attitudes, hormones, diets, and nervous systems back into alignment with natural law.  Alignment creates the harmony we call health.

When you come in to see me it is because something feels out of alignment in your life.  My job is to figure out what the misalignment is and then either re-align it or give you the tools and guidance to re-align it yourself.  It would be nice if re-alignment could be simplified down to a single spinal adjustment, or a special magical herb, or one attitude or exercise, but you are complex.  So while the goal is simple, you are not.  But on this the beginning of the new year it is valuable to re-center on the goal.

We are here to learn how to manifest ourselves, our dreams, our potentials, and learn how to do this in harmony with all the rest of life.  Self-unfoldment and harmony with life can often seem to be opposite goals.  Complete dedication to only one of these does in fact create opposition to the other half.  This is why we need constant alignment with natural law.  Natural law is the harmonious balance of these two opposites.  Whether you choose to see this balance as God's law, or as the natural outcome of the trial and error process of natural evolution makes no difference...the law is the law.  We know when we have violated the law by the imbalances in our bodies and our lives that result.  This is why re-alignment is necessary, to reestablish homeostasis - balance.

Life is a trial and error process.  We pursue happiness, meaning, and fulfillment in our lives the best we are able by making guesses as to what will bring us what we want, then guessing what actions will take us there.  None of us "knows" the "right" answer to how to live life because we are all designed to be different - that means we all have different goals and different life paths.  But one thing that is universal is that if we get unbalanced, out of alignment, we will crash and burn.   Maintaining balance is tricky and depends on constant feedback from our bodies, from life, and from others.  We can not make this journey alone.  We are invisible to ourselves.  We depend upon the reflections of ourselves from others and from our body to be able to assess where we are and how well we are doing.  My job is to interpret what your body and your life is telling you to help you re-align with the natural order in life.

So if you were wondering just what is it I do, well, I help align people with life, with natural law.  I work with bones, and muscles, and nerves, and meridians, and hormones, and neurotransmitters, and nutrition, and digestion, and exercise, and lifestyle, and energetic balance, and life lessons, all to create balance and harmony.  I help people adjust to life, to come into greater alignment with what is.  For me this is health...the ability to successfully adapt and adjust to life.

I believe in alignment.  I believe to be happy we need alignment in all areas of our lives.  Just cleaning up our diet but not our relationships will not leave us happy.  Developing our spiritual health but ignoring our body will not leave us happy.  Focusing completely on our financial health and leaving no time for leisure and play is just a ticket to an early grave.  Balance is the key.  Alignment with the laws of life is the key to happiness, health, and well being.  My practice is simply the reflection of my own life process.  What I bring to the office are the skills I am learning in my own life.  Every day is a new journey of alignment.  I am about alignment.  I am about improving the quality of each life through alignment with natural law.

Join me on the conscious journey of unfoldment and harmony.  Even though feedback from life is not always comfortable, embrace it and adjust your life course back into alignment with Natural Law.  The ultimate outcome is happiness, meaning, and fulfillment...a good goal for the New Year.

Good Journey,
David

Vitamin D - the Sunshine Hormone

This one is easy because everyone of you needs vitamin D this time of year.  It is not possible to get enough sunshine at this latitude because the ultraviolet light necessary to form the vitamin D simply is not in the sunshine during the winter months.  Most of us need vitamin D year round because we live and work indoors away from direct sunlight.  An interesting finding is that since the Taliban took power in the middle east and started enforcing the complete coverage of women's bodies when outside, there has been an epidemic of osteomalacia.  Even getting enough sunlight does not assure your body makes and absorbs enough D through your skin.  Everyone is different genetically and metabolically.

Tho only way to be sure if you are getting enough vitamin D is through blood testing (the 25-OH test).  What are the symptoms of low vitamin D?

  • Colds and Flu

  • Periodontal Disease and Cavities

  • Depression and Seasonal Affective Disorder

  • Osteoporosis/Osteomalacia

  • Fibromyalgia

  • Heart Failure and Cardiomyopathy

  • High blood pressure

  • Lung cancer

  • Ovarian cancer

  • Colon Cancer

  • Asthma

  • Breast cancer

  • Multiple Sclerosis

  •
Vitamin D is a powerful moderator for our immune system, so many of the symptoms are related to inability to ward off sicknesses and cancers.  Vitamin D is also essential for the proper utilization of calcium in our bodies, hence the relationship to bone weakness, blood pressure and heart function.  Meta-analysis of vitamin D research concludes at least 78% of the US population is low in vitamin D - so that means that you are probably low.

So how much do you need?  The old RDA number of 400 IU was designed to prevent the childhood bone softening disease rickets.  With the recent discoveries of vitamin D's effect on our immune system the new number is closer to 10 times the old number - 2000 to 6000 IU per day and 6000 to 10,000 if you have an auto-immune disease like Hashimoto's thyroiditis or rheumatiod arthritis.

Personally I take 6000 IU per day.  I did the blood testing and found my levels were less than half what they should be.  I retested after 2 months of supplementation and they had come up to normal levels.  I would recommend you consider adding a dose of vitamin D to your daily routine, particularly if you have any immune system trouble.

    For your good health,

Well the holidays are almost over.  I would like to say I held the line, but that would be a lie.  My New Years resolution will be focused on erasing the denial about the depth of my gluten sensitivity and all that entails.  Unfortunately I learned in the Thyroid seminar I attended recently that both casein and corn cross react with gluten sensitivity, and that even though I don't show a blood reaction to goat or sheep milk, I am probably still reacting in my gut.  That means cutting out goat cheese and corn tortillas - two of my dietary mainstays.  Bummer.

My other denial I will have to face is that a low carb lifestyle is not enough for long term weight loss, a low fat lifestyle is also needed.  The Atkins diet works well for the first few months but then slows down to a crawl.  We know that low fat high carb does not work after the first few pounds.  That basically leaves low fat low carb as the way to go (understanding that low carb really means low glycemic impact carbs.)  2010 will be an adventure.

No pain, no gain: Mastering a skill makes us stressed in the moment, happy long term

No pain, no gain applies to happiness, too, according to new research published online this week in the Journal of Happiness Studies. People who work hard at improving a skill or ability, such as mastering a math problem or learning to drive, may experience stress in the moment, but experience greater happiness on a daily basis and longer term, the study suggests.

    New robotic hand 'can feel'

Does anybody remember when Luke Skywalker got his hand cut off in a lightsaber battle with Darth Vader?  A couple scenes later Luke gets his hand replaced with a feeling robotic hand.  Well movie magic is now turning to reality.  A team of scientists from Italy and Sweden has developed what is believed to be the first artificial hand that has feeling. It has been attached to the arm of a 22-year-old man who lost his own hand through cancer.  Researchers say it works by connecting human nerve endings with tiny electronic sensors.  Here is a video clip showing the new hand in action...pretty cool.

    Caesar Nut Dressing

Do you enjoy a good Caesar salad as a meal but don't want the dairy products in it?  Since I now have to avoid dairy as well as grains I am always creating alternative ways of having my favorite foods.  Here is the dressing I invented for Christmas dinner this year.

      ½ c. cashews or
       almonds
      2 tsp. coarse black
      pepper

grind up in Vitamix and then add

      2 Tbs. Fish sauce
      2 Tbs. Chopped garlic
      (probably less if fresh
      garlic)
      1 c. Mayonnaise
      ½ c. seasoned rice
      vinegar
      ½ c. apple cider
      vinegar

    blend all in Vitamix

Use whatever favorite healthy mayonnaise you prefer.  Add more apple cider vinegar as needed for more bite, or add some lemon juice.  Tabasco can be added for some zing if desired or some Worcestershire for a fuller, deeper taste.  Other spices like mustard, lemon grass, cumin, caraway, dill, and what not can be played with as well.
Toss this dressing into a bowl of Romaine lettuce and maybe some shredded chicken breast and steamed asparagus and you have one delicious meal.

    Vita-Mix
If you are interested in making an excellent investment in your health I would recommend the purchase of a Vita-Mix juicer/blender.  I have been using mine for 25 years now.  It is positively the best way to retain the full nutritional value of the food you prepare and make it available for your system to actually absorb...plus it makes great ice cream!  I contacted the company last week and arranged for free shipping for my patients (a $25 savings)  If you are interested then
