Mind Body Connections - pt.2

 Hi ,

Muscle Brain - pt.2

Most ill health begins as unconscious feeling conflicts, repression, and unresolved tensions.  Since they are unconscious you do not feel them.  They probably were conscious at one time, but when you encountered the conflict you did not have a resolution at that time so you shoved the feeling tension to the back of your mind and forgot it.  The back of the mind is literally and physically the unconscious motor control area of your brain.  Every unresolved feeling you have ever had is stuck somewhere back there in the back of your brain affecting your unconscious muscle function.  Events and experiences in your current life will trigger these old conflict patterns to rise up to the subconscious level where they start weakening and unbalancing your muscles and organs.

So now the importance of unconscious unresolved feelings starts to become clear.  80% of your ill health is tied to these unresolved feelings through their actions on your unconscious muscles.  We blindly totter along pretending that if we can't feel them, then they must not really exist.  Well you can't see or feel nuclear radiation but it will still kill you.  You can't see or feel Ebola virus until it is too late.  You don't see or feel most of the things that kill people, but you know they are there by the effects they have on the body.  The same is true here for repressed feeling conflicts.

So what is really happening in your brain when there are feeling conflicts?  Different parts of your brain are responsible for different things.  Your left frontal brain is for focused, literal, straight-line goal focused needs.  On the other hand your right brain takes in the big picture and puts things into a feeling connection context.  Your hind brain holds your fight-flight-feed survival programming, while your mid brain is all about social and family bonding and group goals.  In an ideal world life would present you with simple situations that only require input from one brain area - it makes its choices and you act on those choices.  But the real world we live in is not simple.  Multiple brain areas try to take responsibility for our action response to life and their drives and motivations are often in direct conflict with each other.  When this happens the brain creates conflict, which we feel as a bad feeling.  This bad feeling not only hit us emotionally, but sends confusing and conflicting messages to our muscles causing tension and pain.

What are some examples of these conflicts?  Wanting to be taken care of but also wanting control.  Wanting love but not wanting to risk letting out your feelings.  Wanting power and safety at the same time.  Wanting to be the center of attention but not wanting to be judged.  Wanting your way from other people.  Wanting to be free but wanting to be protected and safe at the same time. Wanting to move to the country but not wanting to leave the city.  Wanting your child to grow up but wanting them to copy your way of doing things.  Wanting to turn left but wondering what was down the lane to the right.  Anything can be a conflict.  Unresolved feelings run rampant within us.

What can we do?  The alternative health field has developed many methods for producing relaxation when these tensions pop up.  Specialized therapists of several disciplines work with discovering the unresolved and trapped feelings.  Counselors and Somatic therapists work in these areas to release these feelings in hopes of producing a healing response.

At Fair Oaks Healing Arts we take a different approach.  My view is that a feeling conflict is simply the result of a lack of skills - the skills that build the necessary feeling relationship to life to resolve the conflict.  Generally this is because of a lack of maturity, meaning a lack of the proper models and personal experiences necessary to conceive of how to resolve these conflicts.  It takes a lifetime of successful trial and error to figure out what works and what does not work.  This lifetime of successful trial and error creates what we call maturity and wisdom.  Fortunately we all face pretty much the same feeling challenges, so it is not necessary for each of us to trudge our way through every experience ourselves.  We can learn from the mistakes and achievements of others.   There is simple information about how life works that can help us immensely.  This is not head knowledge, but experiential knowledge.  If someone can put us on the right track up front, then we can cut out 90% of the trial and error and go straight to the experiential learning.

The first step is to let go of our old way of seeing things and open to a new way.  For this I have created Gracework IGH.  IGH stands for Into God's Hands.  This is a "laying on of hands" healing technique much like the healing performed in revival tents and churches all over the world, but without the fanfare and sermon.  When you are willing to "Let go of what is not working in your life and let God show you a new way" amazing things happen.  Often we already have within us all the answers we need, but we don't have the ability to use them because we are stuck with our habitual old way of doing things.  Gracework IGH gives you the space for this release to happen easily.

The next step when necessary is to provide your nervous system with the information and model necessary to resolve the old conflicts on a subconscious level as well as the tools to practice this new information to turn it into experiential knowing.   This involves bypassing the conscious mind filters and loading these feeling relationships and flow patterns directly into the body - mind.  This is achieved both energetically and through the use of synchronic sound training technology.  Original Gracework provides the energetic shift and brain retraining exercises to help you make the growth into maturity with ease and a minimum of the old trial and error.  My next project is to create the synchronic sound scripts and CDs to enable those not able to come into the office for Gracework to enjoy the benefits of this easy and fast way to grow into a better and more effective life.

For the really stubborn ego attached old patterns we have the granddaddy change process - Heartflow.  This one-on-one therapeutic environment uses muscle testing of your body to find the roots of your false beliefs and what is necessary to bring about an easy natural change.  Its basic principle is that growth occurs through moving toward what your heart is attracted to.  Every path is different and every person unique, so your growth and healing must also be unique.

Health Challenge #12
Give your digestive tract a rest periodically.

This may be a new concept for many of you, but our bodies were not designed for the abundance of food we have in this culture.  In a natural environment the human body experiences times with no food.  This is the time the body uses to eliminate toxic waste and heal the digestive system as well as the whole body.  As I emphasized in the last newsletter - Life is toxic.  Living systems produce toxic waste and that waste has to be eliminated or else the system becomes poisoned and disease shortly follows.  Your body needs a rest from food now and then.  How can we do this in the most effective manner possible?

The answer is fasting.  For 20+ years I fasted every Thursday night to Saturday morning on water only.  This simple little addition to your lifestyle can make a world of difference in your total health.  Many people are challenged with the idea of not eating for any length of time.  For myself my first water fast was tremendously liberating.  I took in water only for 2 weeks when I was a freshman in college.  I was astounded by how easy this was after the first 3 days.  I still attended all my classes and even went to the dinning commons with my friends, but had no desire for food.  It was very freeing to break the hold food had on my life.

I have since come to believe that water fasting is not the best way to fast except in certain medical situations.  The reason has to do with what I discussed last time concerning how the liver eliminates poisons.  Our livers get kicked into high gear with poison elimination when we fast, but without the fiber in the GI tract to bind the poisons and carry them out, the poisons get reabsorbed back into our system.  This is not helpful.  In a natural environment when there is little or no food, our ancestors would literally eat tree bark and any young shoots of grasses they could find.  This is major fiber!

To fill this need of our body to get a break from food and yet encourage maximum detoxification I have created what I call The Green Fast.  The toxic stress on our digestive tract comes from proteins and simple carbohydrates (plus all the food poisons in our regular diet that hopefully you have learned about in the previous Health Challenges.)  So the idea is to avoid all foods that stress our digestive tract for 7 to 10 days while we heal and clean out.  Hunger is not an issue with this type of fast as you will be stuffing yourself with greens.  A little bit of fat is added to stimulate the metabolism (coconut oil is the best for this purpose), as well as detoxifying herbs and spices.  For the complete protocol please go to The Green Fast

The real challenge with this cleanse is the first 3 days as you withdraw from the addictive chemicals in your usual diet.  Once you break the hold these have on you it is clear sailing.  You will likely drop 5 to 8 pounds of water held by your body due to inflammation.  This addresses the main reason for The Green Fast - to fight inflammation.  You can increase the toxin removal greatly by taking two products from the office - Bilemin and Metacrin DX which help the liver break down the poisons and flush them.  If you are prone to hypoglycemia, come into the office first to adjust this pattern.

Many patients have asked me about colon cleanses or the master fast.  In my opinion this is a much better protocol, easier, and a lot less expensive than what they were asking me about.  Take the step to clean and heal your gut regularly - 2-4 times a year would be ideal.  You will feel better and you will be better.

Whale Watch:

Yes, I started a Green Fast last Thursday night to break the eating cycle I got into with the Japan trip.  The 6 pounds of water weight I gained from eating too many carbs and sugars has dropped off as well as a couple extra pounds.  This is good as I need to fit into a tux for my older son's wedding in a week and a half.  I worked out enough of the emotional factors to be able to engage the Green Fast without any difficulty.  Now I get to navigate the wedding scene with grace and joy and keep by balance as my son takes the big leap.

This Green Fast really is not bad.  Ellen has been finding mostly delicious ways to prepare the greens (with the notable exception of some really tough chard - not her fault).  If I find I am getting hungry even though my stomach is full of greens I find it means that I need a little bit of fat to mellow out the metabolism.  We have remedied this with a dollop of coconut milk in with the hot greens.  The number of ways you can combine different flavors of different vinegars is amazing.  Stevia does a nice job of sweetening the vinegars a bit plus I use it in club soda along with flavor extracts to produce a nice beverage.  Add in some green ripe olives and some garlic and you have a feast.

Pep talk aside, sticking with just plain greens adds a whole new and more profound dimension to the green fast.  By making the food consumption bland and boring you have the opportunity to fast from the whole consciousness of eating.  This can give you a profound new sense of freedom from the "gotta eat or I will die" mindset we believe in this country.  Most all of us would only get healthier if we missed a few meals now and then.  Our bodies need a rest from food to clean out and heal and we never give it that chance anymore.

For those of us wanting to drop a few pounds the Green Fast is an excellent beginning.  After 7 days of cleansing with the greens, just keep going with the addition of 2-4 ounces of protein at each meal and a serving of low carb fruit.  How simple is that?

Obesity health risk cause 'found'

In previous newsletters I have written about how fat cells produce inflammation in our bodies that set us up for heart disease and diabetes.  Well now they have discovered the actual mechanism behind this rather than the generic "inflammation".  There is an actual neuropeptide fat cells release that tell the other cells of your body to become insulin resistant.  In a related report the idea that obesity is a genetic issue is largely shown to be false as the main cause of obesity in children is found to be obesity in the same sexed parent, not either parent as it would be in a genetic cause.

The devil in the milk
Milk has always been a problem for a significant number of my patients.  Milk sensitivity was often to blame but often the symptoms persist even after clearing the sensitivity.  We may now know why - not all cows produce the same type of milk.  The most common type of cow in this country produces a milk that releases a protein fragment called BCM-7 which irritates the brain tending to create autistic and schizophrenic changes, impairs the immune system, and provokes type 1 diabetes.  Learn more here...

Incredible Toilet Paper Wedding Dresses

Now here is something you don't see everyday - wedding dresses made entirely from toilet paper.  These are no simple disposable affairs either.  The detail is amazingly complex.  The top finalists in this competition get their dresses put into Ripley's Museums.

Sauerkraut and Pickles

Gypsy is our resident fermentation expert for making healthy fermented vegetable, dairy products, and sprouted grain products.  She has pulled a couple of her favorite recipes from " Nourishing Traditions" by Sally Fallon and modified them just a bit to share with you.
Makes 1 Quart Sauerkraut

I Medium Cabbage Head, cored and shredded
     1 TBS Caraway seeds (optional)
     1 TBS Sea Salt
4 TBS Whey (if not available, use an additional 1 TBS of salt)
*In a bowl, mix shredded cabbage with caraway seeds, sea salt and whey. Pound with a wooden pounder or meat hammer for about 10 minutes to release juices. Place in a quart sized, wide mouthed mason  jar and press down firmly with a pounder or meat hammer until juices come to the top of the jar. Cover tightly and keep at room temperature for about 3 days before transferring to cold storage. The sauerkraut may be eaten immediately, but improves with age.
*Variations: Add 1 cup of shredded carrots, finely sliced onions and various herbs and spices, such as garlic, oregano, and red pepper flakes.

To make whey (and yogurt cream cheese):
Pour plain, whole milk yogurt into a strainer lined with a clean dish towel set over a bowl. Cover and let stand for several hours at room temperature. The whey will drip into the bowl while the solids will stay in the covered strainer. Then, tie up the towel with the solids inside onto a wooden spoon and let hang over the bowl so that more whey can drip out, but do not squeeze. When the bag stops dripping, the cream cheese inside can be stored in a covered glass container in the refrigerator for up to 1 month. The liquid whey can be stored in a glass mason jar for up to 6 months and used in fermenting to reduce the amount of salt required. The cream cheese is excellent with added herbs as a spread.

Pickled Cucumbers
Taken from the "Nourishing Traditions"
cookbook by Sally Fallon

Makes 1 Quart

  4-5 Pickling Cucumbers or
     15-20 Gherkins
  1 TBS Mustard Seeds

  2 TBS Fresh Dill, snipped
  1 TBS Sea Salt
4 TBS Whey (if not available, use an additional 1 TBS of salt)
1 Cup Filtered Water
*Wash cucumbers well and place in a quart-sized, wide-mouthed mason jar. Combine remaining ingredients and pour over cucumbers, adding more water if necessary to cover cucumbers. The top of the liquid should be at least 1 inch below the top of the jar. Cover tightly and keep at room temperature for about 3 days before transferring to cold storage.

"When we buy vegetables, we are often deceived by their color and appearance whereas their aroma, taste and consistency tell us more about their quality. And quality is of paramount importance if we want to preserve these vegetables through lacto-fermentation; lactic-acid-producing bacteria need a great many vitamins and minerals that only vegetables rich in these elements can supply. This is why when foods are successfully lacto-fermented, we can be assured of their inherent nutritional quality.

Gypsy has brought some of her home fermented pickles to the office for patients to try.  Ask at the front desk for a sample while the jar lasts.
