A terrible revelation

 Hi ,

I have been a Chiropractor for 28 years and I have missed the big picture most of that time.  I had it for a couple years back in 1990 and 91 but lost it somehow.  I have been living and working under the false perspective that correcting problems will produce health.  Never mind that my head was filled with wellness philosophy, my day-to-day actions were about balancing the unbalanced and correcting whatever was not working.  Health and wellness is about a lot more than just that.  Health is about zest and gusto for living.  Health values feeling good, not just avoiding pain.  Health wants to engage the challenges of life and build something better.

I see now that I have been running a pain-centered practice for 26 of my 28 years.  My motto has been "seek just enough care to decrease your pain to acceptable levels."  I have been studying what creates health forever, but only recommending the least care necessary to get by.  We need to do more than just get by.  Somewhere I missed that since life is about joyfully engaging and playing with possibilities, that it was my job to support that larger process in my patients.  I pursue it in my own life, but have not been promoting it in my practice.  I wish to change that.

In retrospect I see that my desire to create this newsletter was my heart pulling me forward to make this shift...but it needs to go further...I need to go further.  I am not sure just what that should look like, so I will be trying different things to bring about this shift.  One big piece I am engaging in my own life is to upgrade my own health.  Even though my body is not showing significant signs of degeneration, I know enough now to know the many silent processes going on in my body that will soon limit my capacity for enjoying life if I don't turn them around now.  Proactive preventative care is my personal goal right now.  I will be suggesting a lot more of that to you in issues to come and in the office.  Too many of these silent processes can not be reversed once they start showing symptoms.  The Health Challenges start to address some of these generally, but we have the tools to get a lot more specific.

Even more importantly is developing the support systems for helping people to reach for their joy in life.  I firmly believe that our body is a reflection of our spirit.  When we are joyful our body functions better.  Stress is out of hand in this culture.  We must step beyond the lifestyle of stress and engage life from a healthier and firmer footing.  Life is not going to slow down for us, so we will have to make the choices necessary to improve our quality of life.    We have to dig much deeper to find where our happiness really comes from choose to engage that.  It is not enough to just try to survive.  We need quality of life.

Most of our energy is not spent on survival anyway.  That is a lie we have created to hide the fact that most of our energy really goes toward pursuing acquisition and control of our environment in the false belief that if we could make our outside world be the way we want, then we would be happy.  That is not how it works.  The most stressed out and unhappy man in the kingdom is the king.  Life is slippery, and the more you try to control it the more miserable your life becomes.

So what is the alternative?  I say time for us to get back to basics.  What really fills our hearts.  What inspires us, motivates us, draws us forward?  Am I willing to do whatever it takes to improve my life experience, or am I just going to watch the evening news...again.  Depth and richness of life surround us.  All that we need to improve our life is within our grasp now.  It means approaching life from a different perspective, trying some new things, creating change a little bit at a time.  I am talking about change in our bodies, our minds, our hearts, and our lives.  I am talking about changing what is important to us...what we pay attention to in our lives.
Our ability to control our attention is the most powerful tool we posses.

This may sound like a tall order, but so what.  We don't get points for staying small.  We are here to unfold and expand our potentials, not to get comfortable.  What kind of epitaph is comfortable...here lies John Smith - he was comfortable.  We are here to contribute our uniqueness to the expansion and expression of life...to share our light, not hide it.

I will be encouraging each of you to engage different aspects of your physical, psychological, and spiritual health as this path unfolds before me.  I welcome your participation.

Good Journey,
David

Health Challenge #9
Improve your digestion.  If you are over 45 begin each meal with enzymes and take hydrochloric acid supplements in the middle of any meal that has protein in it.

Health begins in the gut.  With age our gut enzymes decrease as does the ability of our stomach to produce hydrochloric acid.  Without these essential substances we can not completely digest our food.  We do not absorb our minerals which then weakens our bones and muscles.  We develop food sensitivities.  We lose the integrity of our tissues and the ability to produce the energy we need to live and enjoy life.  If you are younger and have bloating or gas or acid stomach be sure to mention it to me the next time you are in the office.  Antacids only compound the problem, not solve it.

If you missed any of the previous health challenges -

Whale Watch:
I decided to get serious about the inflammation in my gut and for a week ate nothing but greens.  I was planning on doing a water fast like I have done many times in the past as this allows complete rest for the gut.  However I started thinking that any toxicity present would just be sitting there so I decided that a week of high fiber greens would work better.  Greens provide tons of phyto-nutrients to help detoxify the gut and fiber to push out the poisons.  By not using any protein, fats, or significant carbs my digestion was almost nil.  Short-term protein deprivation is not a problem and the low calorie intake jumped my pounds dropped since Jan 14th to 30 pounds.
I am now facing a much harder task for me - trying to remember to begin each meal with additional enzymes and to take additional hydrochloric acid during each meal.  Most everyone past the age of 45 needs one or both of these.  I have only remembered both steps a few times so far.  I have also started taking additional L-Glutamine in a powder form.  The gut uses L -Glutamine for energy to repair itself and do its job correctly.  I also need to do a test for the presence of any bad bacteria, yeasts, or parasites that could be compromising gut function.  Healing the gut can be done, but it is not a simple one step process or the taking of a single supplement.  The health of the entire body begins with the health of the gut.  The journey continues...

Unveiling the "Sixth Sense"

This video of a presentation at the TED conference shows how quickly we are moving towards complete integration with our computer information systems.  Researchers have created an information system we will wear that can continuously give us feedback about our environment by recognizing things as we encounter them and projecting information visually out in front of us.  This means anything from store products to our schedules to bios on people we meet.  This system literally expands our senses beyond the moment into the world of information in real time as we are living our life.

Cooking Greens

Over the last 20 years or so scientists have found between 10 and 20 thousand different and important nutrients in our food.  The highest concentration of these nutrients is found in Greens.  We are talking Kale, Collards. Spinach and their friends.  Now I bet less than 1 person in a hundred actually eats greens regularly.  This is partly because unless  you know how to cook them correctly, they taste really nasty.  So I found a nice article on how to cook greens.

And here is a nice index of cooking greens to show you the variety of greens available.

Living Moss Carpet

How about using living plants as a functional part of your interior living?  This living moss bathmat looks absolutely wonderful and it actually loves the damp environment of the bathroom.  Or even more beautiful, using moss as a visual carpet to define and beautify any interior space.

How the Powerful Got That Way

As a philosopher I tend to have a rather long view of politics.  I find it difficult to get involved in the daily flow of the political games as I see them as manipulations of public opinion for agendas that are much larger than we are privy to as mere citizens.  For this reason I like articles like this one that look at the big picture to help me put what appears to be insanity into the larger context.

Susan's Rainbow Chard

A week ago I ate nothing but greens for 7 days.  I am not skilled in the preparation of greens but our massage therapist is well versed in their tasty preparation.  Here is an actually good tasting way to fix chard.

1 bunch Red or Rainbow Chard
    ¼ cup Mandarin Orange pieces
    ¼ cup Mandarin Orange juice
    Grapeseed oil
    2 Tbs. Dried cranberries
    2 Tbs. Raw Pine Nuts

Dice Mandarin orange and prepare juice - set aside.  Rinse chard and separate chard leaves from stems.  Chop stems into bite sized pieces and place in a large shallow pan that has a lid.  Loosely chop chard leaves and place on top of the stems.  Drizzle a small amount of oil lightly over the chard.  Drizzle half the juice over the leaves.  Cover pan and cook on low for several minutes (5-8) until the bottom leaves are hot and beginning to wilt.  With a large spatula turn over the pile of chard in the pan.  Add the rest of the juice, cranberries, and pine nuts.  Cover and cook for 3-5 more minutes.  Remove lid and increase heat to medium and sauté until leaves are evenly wilted.  Remove from heat.  Add diced Mandarin orange and serve.  Some folks may wish to add salt to taste.
