Fair Oaks Health News

Welcome
Hi everyone,                                               8-3-08

Welcome to the third issue of the Fair Oaks Health Newsletter.

I am getting to write this newsletter from a prone position on my bed on my laptop. The last week and a half has been an opportunity for me to learn compassion and deep appreciation for all my patients that have experienced back pain that seems to go on forever.  I have experienced brief periods of back pain due to a lifting strain or really intense back pain with kidney stones, but never debilitating pain that just does not get better.  Well, I am now getting that special opportunity.  Just like I have heard a thousand times, I didn't do a thing to cause it.

I was standing at the kitchen counter about to spray some organic cleaner on a cabinet door to take off some dust when bam - my low back goes out.  I mean it drops me right now,  like somebody set off a small explosive in my low back.  I drop to my elbows and hang on to the counter for dear life for about 20 minutes.  When I can breathe normally, almost, my sweetheart Ellen slides a chair under me for me to collapse into.  So now I am stuck in a chair and can't get up.  Curiously in about half an hour I am supposed to be at my weekly Chiropractic adjustment trade I do with Dr. Fisher.  Ellen calls Dr. Fisher and he graciously offers to come over and do what he can with me stuck in the chair.  He does so and about an hour later I am able to slowly hobble to my bed.  As my back is in complete spasm, Ellen then calls Susan McDonald, the excellent massage therapist at the office, to plead for help.  Being an angle of mercy she arrives and works on me forever.  Before she leaves I am able to hoist myself upright and hang on to my dresser and do pelvic circles and rocking to increase mobility in the hips and low back.  By the next day I am gingerly mobile and able to work slowly at the office.  Everything seems to be progressing nicely as I get a little better each day.

I week goes by and only a little pain is left.  I am currently refinishing my kitchen cabinets.  I had stripped them the weekend before and n ow I was ready to do the 3 grades of sanding and start the first paint coat.  All is good.  I have set up a table and chair on the back porch so I can be working in a good back protective position.  Everything goes well until the late afternoon.  I am getting tired after 8 hours of sanding and painting...but do I stop - no.  My ego override says "You only have 2 doors left".  "Your back will last just fine."  I shouldn't have listened to my ego.  My back started to seize up.  I immediately laid down and put a cold pack on it but to no avail.  By the next morning I couldn't get out of bed and I have basically have been flat on my back for the last 4 days.  Lots of friends have been offering to help and Susan and Dr. Fisher have both been over several times to work on me, but the pain and spasm is just being stubborn.  The last time Dr. Fisher checked me out everything was "in place", but just in pain...a sure sign that the cause was an emotional, mental, or spiritual conflict causing the pain.  Yeah, I knew that.  But knowing that is not the same as being able to identify it and bring it to complete resolution.  Exploring the causes behind the pain using the Heartflow process I developed has been unfolding some deep change for me.  The pain is better in most positions, but standing or sitting for more than 3 or 4 minutes still is a problem.  I was not able to work Thursday and Friday last week.  We shall see tomorrow morning if I will be at work for Monday.  My processing continues... more to come.

Blessings,
   David

8-9-08

Hi again,

This newsletter is getting out late, what with the back pain
adventure and preparing for my son's visit. I have not seen him for about a year now.  He arrived Thursday night around 11pm and promptly turned around and headed out at 3am to accompany a friend who was delivering a car to somewhere in Las Vegas.  He thought it would be a great chance to show Miki a little bit of America. I don't recall ever having that kind of stamina - to be able to fly 20 hours and then drive 9 hours only to turn around and hop in a car to Vegas.

The back flared up and I had not been able to sit upright until yesterday.  This has delayed getting this issue out by about a week.  I seem to be on the mend now.  At least I can sit for a while and get this chance to communicate with you.  I have been finding lots of interesting articles on the internet.  Next issue will be focused on some new findings with heart disease.  Until then... take care,
David

Happiness 'immune to life events'

BBC News
Here is an excellent study that supports one of the basic principles of the growth program Heartflow.  It shows that how happy or unhappy you are has little to do with your life experiences and everything to do with the basic relationship you have with life, much like a thermostat.  What they don't mention is the exciting work at changing that "happiness thermostat" through improving your relationship with life.  Normally this relationship is learned in childhood and does not change much after that.  But certain techniques like Gracework and Heartflow reshape those primary relationships to create a new lease on life.

Soy foods 'reduce sperm numbers'

For many years now I have been warning patients about the dangers of soy as a food source. It is bad. Here is one more way soy disrupts your health. We have the illusion that soy must be a health food because of a sly bit of propaganda put out by the seed oil industry. - the same folks that lied to us about the dangers of tropical oils. After pressing out the oil from soy beans the waste pulp left over wasn't good for much as it had failed as a feed for livestock. So those clever marketing guys introduced us to tofu as a healthy protein replacement. They lied and used the statistics for heart disease in Asia as evidence that soy is a healthy food. The lie was that Asians eat soy as a protein source. They don't. Soy is used in Asia as a flavoring agent, not as a protein. The average daily consumption of soy products in Asia is only 2 teaspoons per day per person. When they do use soy, it is usually in its fermented forms which neutralizes most of the harmful properties of the soy.

Farmers know the dangers of soy, because when pigs or cattle are fed soy they develop wasting diseases and fail to thrive. To be able to feed animals soy based feeds, the soy has to be heated to very high temperatures for long periods of time to destroy the harmful enzymes (yes, not all enzymes are good for you) and the hormone like substances.

Exercise 'slows down Alzheimer's'

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/7505091.stm

One of the key revelations from the brain research arena is that the human brain was designed to function while in motion. For years I have been telling patients to "Move it or lose it". Apparently this is also true for brain function also. Many studies have shown that brain function is enhanced through exercise. Memory, critical thinking skills, creativity, and so on are all greatly improved with regular movement. I am not talking about being an athlete. I am talking about simple walking, bicycling, swimming, etc. Now this newest piece of research shows 4 times as much brain shrinkage in those who are not active and fit than those who are. Brain shrinkage is one of the early tests for Alzheimer's. So now being a couch potato takes on a whole new meaning...more like becoming a mental vegetable.

Worry 'ups men's diabetes risk'

I found this report interesting, not because worry is linked to diabetes, but because it only seems to affect men. We well understand in my practice that unbalanced or stuck feelings cause health problems. 80% of the patients I see have some degree of feeling cause behind their symptoms. This is why I created Heartflow and Gracework. But to find out that this particular imbalance only affects men says that women must have some powerful skills at reducing the stress of worry that men are just clueless about. I wonder how many other skills women have that us guys have missed out on.

How Food Affects Behavior

Most of you know that I have been checking patients for blood sugar problems for 25 years now. Finally the press is beginning to catch up with the awareness that blood sugar imbalances devastate peoples lives in many ways. They shut down your immune system, set you up for food sensitivities, cause panic attacks, and destroy your energy systems. Blood sugar responses are in my opinion the main cause of heart disease/hardening of the arteries. This is all without even talking about diabetes. Alternative doctors have known this for a long time. The common press is not interested however...perhaps because so much of their revenue comes from advertising sugar and high carb based foods. Here is a report outlining one doctor's efforts to make the public more aware of this insidious health threat.

    * 2-3 teaspoons Stevia
    * 1/2 teaspoon Salt
    * 1/2 teaspoon Vanilla
    *1/2 teaspoon Almond
        extract
    * 1 cup high coco mass
       chocolate chips
    * 2/3 cup Coconut Flour

1. Mix the first 7 ingredients  in a large bowl and then mix well.

2. Sift in the coconut flour and  mix well, then add the chocolate chips.

3. if you like you may add some chopped dried fruit or slivered almonds for a different flavor.

4. Spoon mounds onto a cookie sheet and bake at 375 degrees for 12 to 15 minutes.

I invented this recipe as an alternative to peanut butter cookies as many people are sensitive to peanuts.  It is high in fiber and protein and has of only small amounts sugar, making it much healthier than most cookies.
